Contemporary marbled boards, leather crnrs, rebacked in simulated brwn calf (edgewear, rubbing, minor bumping to corners, faint tide mark to upper fore-edge & gutter margin of textblock, occasional foxing & toning as usual), still a G copy. First edition of the complete first year of this early 19th-century American agricultural trade magazine. The original Genesee Farmer had been absorbed into The Cultivator in 1839, which was published in Albany by Buel. Thomas and Bateham reformed the magazine and began publishing right away in order to service the burgeoning orchard and farming businesses surrounding Rochester, New York, which would eventually become within a few decades a vast nursery operation. The articles focus on farm equipment, threshing machines, beekeeping, recipes, controlling weeds, growing vegetables, grains, cooking recipes, and much more. In addition there are a number of letters to the editor, and commentary on the growing problem of educated daughters of farmers deciding to leave the land, and a backlash against a liberal education for women. The index with the complete volume offers an excellent reference tool.
