Trade Paperback. Condizione: Fine. Mason, Cameron - Cover Design (illustratore). Third Printing. 106 Pages. Ticasuk, a 20th-century Inupiat Eskimo woman, writes a true and compelling account of generations of an Alaskan Native Family. Ater their successful battle with the Indians of Interior Alaska, the Unalakleet warriors were not aware of any Indian survivors. No one in this Eskimo community on the Bering Sea Coast suspected that one person had survived, and there was a great celebration. The day following the celebration, the chief's sister, Masu, was the only one who gave thought to the aftermath of the battle. She left the village early in the morning to salvage the remains of the snares at the battlefield. No one knew when she left. On her way she picked berries until she filled her pack and she left it near the path to retrieve on her way back. Then she continued on to the scene of the battle. When she arrived at the bank of the river, she decided to rest and eat her lunch. While she sat eating, she heard a cough from the other side of the river. She listened . then she heard it again. She was quite sure that it was a human cough, and she immediately waded across the water. Climbing the river bank, she heard the cough again. This time it sounded closer. She walked in the direction of the sound, and each time the cough was repeated, she was guided closer to the source. In this way she walked among the trees until she found an Indian boy lying under a spruce tree on a bed of spruce boughs. He appeared to be about seven years old. Lacking a sleeping bag to keep warm, he was shivering and coughing uncontrollably. Masu went over and sat beside him. She could not speak to him for she was overwhelmed with pity for the starving, helpless boy. He watched anxiously for her next move. She managed to smile comfortingly at him, hoping that he would understand that she would not harm him. He cried silently.
