Bedeutend für Elektrokeramik, Katalyse, Hochtemperatur-Metallurgie und nukleare Oxidmaterialien. Nichtstöchiometrische Oxide sind feste chemische Verbindungen, häufig Übergangsmetalloxide, deren stöchiometrische Verhältnisse von ganzzahligen Werten abweichen. Dies ist auf Gitterdefekte wie Leerstellen oder Zwischengitteratome zurückzuführen. Diese Defekte entstehen durch variable Valenzzustände der Metalle und beeinflussen elektrische, katalytische und magnetische Eigenschaften. Nichtstöchiometrische Oxide haben eine enorme praktische Bedeutung, da ihre Abweichung von der idealen Zusammensetzung meist durch Sauerstoffleerstellen oder Metallüberschuss maßgeschneiderte physikalische und chemische Eigenschaften ermöglicht. Sie sind essenziell in der Elektrochemie, Katalyse und Werkstofftechnik. Sie finden z. B. breite Anwendung in der Keramik, bei Supraleitern und in der Elektrochemie. Der Autor, Ole Toft Sørensen, war ein dänischer Materialwissenschaftler, der maßgebliche Forschungsarbeiten zu den thermodynamischen und strukturellen Eigenschaften von Oxiden durchgeführt hat, insbesondere auch im Hinblick auf ihre Anwendung in der Nukleartechnik.Seine Arbeit war direkt mit dem Vergleich von Cerdioxid und Plutoniumoxid verknüpft, da er fundamentale Studien zur Nicht-Stöchiometrie und den Defektstrukturen dieser Materialien veröffentlichte (In der kerntechnischen Forschung wird sie genutzt, um Experimente sicher durchzuführen). Mit alledem lieferte er der MG unverzichtbares Wissen. Nichtstöchiometrische Oxide bestimmen bei hohen Temperaturen: Sauerstoffaktivität, Oxidations und Reduktionsverhalten, Stabilität von Ofenauskleidungen, Verhalten von Schlacken und Schutzschichten. Die MG betrieb und beriet metallurgische Prozesse (Kupfer, Nickel, Zink, Edelmetalle). Dort entscheidet die Defektchemie von Oxiden über: Korrosionsraten, Lebensdauer von Feuerfestmaterialien, Energieverbrauch, Ausbeute. Ein Fehler in der Oxidchemie konnte Millionen kosten. Sørensen lieferte die theoretische Grundlage, um dieses Risiken zu modellieren. . Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 600.
