El practicante de Aikido utiliza técnicas de proyección e inmovilización para desequilibrar y controlar al contrario, acompañando sus movimientos con una serie de atemis (golpes a los puntos vitales del cuerpo). El entrenamiento incluye el estudio y sentido de los ataques y las caídas, así como la práctica con armas. La eficacia del Aikido no se basa en la potencia y velocidad de ejecución de las técnicas, sino que es indispensable desarrollar buenos reflejos, la presencia-vigilancia, la percepción del otro, la relajación del cuerpo, la intención y sentido del ataque, la noción del tiempo-distancia, la movilidad y estabilidad en el movimiento. En resumen, ser capaz de moverse libre y rápidamente en todas las direcciones sin perder el equilibrio. Tras la gran aceptación de su anterior obra (Aikido, el maestro y el método), Tomás Sánchez ha proseguido con su incansable dedicación en todos los ámbitos del Aikido, condensando en el presente libro un gran acervo que viene a ampliar, a la vez que a complementar, aquella primera obra. Segmentado en tres campos (La práctica, La fuerza y La eficacia), desgrana minuciosa y singularmente los aspectos mentales y técnicos necesarios para conseguir desarrollar las habilidades imprescindibles para ser un buen practicante de Aikido.
