There is a wrinkle to cloth of book cover that appears to be a publishing error - the wrinkle travels from front to back of the book cover - but doesn't affect the book in the slightest.…There is a black smear to the front cover of the book. The text pages are generally clean, though there are occasional spots of foxing. The front inner spine hinge has cracked. There is a previous owner's inked name and note on the front endpaper, and an ink stamped name and address on the front pastedown page. This copy retains the very scarce original printed dustwrapper. The book was published anonymously to protect the identity of the author from the German autho…rities. It was written by Richard Grelling, a German lawyer and pacifist, attacking the German government for its part in beginning World War One. Translated from the German by Alexander Gray. Although published as "Volume 1", Volume 2 only appeared in 1918. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine and front board. The boards are generally clean, but there is some damp marking at the bottom of the rear board - not affecting the interior (please see scans). Head and tail of spine slightly creased, with some fading where the dustwrapper is chipped. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding, and no splitting or fraying. Page block edges foxed. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions and none of the usual foxing - pages really clean. Two pages remain uncut (pp.345-52). ***In the original and scarce thin paper dustwrapper, which is fairly complete, but which has some chipping to the edges. There is also a closed tear and associated creasing to the top edge of the back panel. The dustwrapper is priced ten shillings and sixpence net on the spine. Some darkening, mainly to the back panel. Richard Grelling was born in Berlin, at that time the capital of Prussia. He studied law but after finishing his studies worked as a writer and dramatist. In 1892 he was a founder-member of the German Peace Society, of which he was vice-chairman. From 1903 he lived near Florence, until Italy joined the belligerents in 1915, after which he moved to Switzerland. In 1915 Grelling wrote the anti-war book entitled "J'Accuse", condemning the actions of Germany in causing the war through its foreign policies. The book was banned in Germany but was translated into many languages and enjoyed huge sales. It is part of T. Fisher Unwin's The Works of Friedrich Nietzsche.The first American edition was published in 1897. The Contents of this edition a…re as follows: Introduction by the Editor; A Genealogy of Morals: Foreword, First Essay-- Good and Evil, Good and Bad, Second Essay-- Guilt, Bad Conscience, and the like, Third Essay-- What Do Ascetic Ideals mean?; Poems 1871-1877; Maxims 1882-1885; Poems 1882-1885. The book is in very nice condition. You can see the blue covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on both the front and spine is nicely bright. The gilt of the publisher's name at the bottom of the spine has a little bit of the blue coloring touching some of it. There are four blind-stamped designs on the front, six on the spine. There is some color loss/fading on the front just adjacent to the spine, also on the rear off the middle and top edges. There's also a thin black stain above the rear bottom edge, and there's some 'bubbling' of the cloth on both the front and rear. On the front side of the spine there are three tiny spots of rub-through. There is light wear at the spine ends, some bending in, a tiny tear, a few speck-sized spots of rub-through. The cover edges are in very nice shape. The dark blue is not faded and there is no rubbing at all. There's one speck-sized spot of rub-through at each of the two top corners, not the case with the two bottom corners. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is solid, although there is some thin creasing or crinkling on both sides of the junctures on a number of pages, nothing near the print. I found only one instance in the text where there was a thin space at the juncture between two facing pages, both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. The inside covers and their facing end papers are black. At the juncture between the front inside cover and its facing end paper you can see white where the black paper slightly split. However the front cover is nicely, tightly bound. At the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper there are no tears or wear and the rear cover is nicely, tightly bound as well. There is one tiny tear on the rear inside cover, very minor. Otherwise, the inside covers and end papers are clean and in very good condition. I turned over all the pages in the book so I can say with confidence that they are exceptionally clean. In fact I didn't find any soiling at all. The pages are lightly, uniformly, toned off their edges. The top page edge between the second and third pages of the Contents is uncut and there is a little tear off the top edge of the first Contents page. Toward the middle of the book there are four consecutive pages whose top edge was also uncut. There are no other uncut pages in the book. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing at any of the page corners, no placeholder creases. I counted only three pages with a tear, the tear off their outer edge, one of these three has two tears. None of the tears reach the print. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'A Genealogy of Morals is a key work by Friedrich Nietzsche that critiques traditional morality, particularly Christian ethics, by tracing the historical and psychological origins of concepts like 'good,' 'evil,' and 'guilt'. Through three essays, he distinguishes between 'master morality' (noble, life-affirming) and 'slave morality' (reactive, born from resentment), arguing that the latter inverted values, making the powerful seem 'evil' and the weak 'good'. The book explores the development of the 'bad conscience' and the role of ascetic ideals in creating self-denial and suffering, challenging the foundations of modern moral beliefs.'.
