Hard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First American Edition. First edition in English (volume 3 is the second printing) of this important Platonic study, originally published in German starting in 1928. Bollinger Series LIX 1, 2, 3. The first volume discusses Plato's life and milieu; the second two…his Dialogues. Friedländer was a German-born philologist who had a distinguished career in Germany before being imprisoned and exiled in 1939, after which he had a distinguished career in the United States, teaching at Johns Hopkins and UCLA. These translations, done under the author's supervision, are based on the second German editions of 1954-1960, with some revisions to the text and extensive revisions and additions to the notes. Hardcovers in jackets, as pictured; books show some light wear, mostly light bumping to corners, small stamp to bottom edge of volume 2, ink name; Volume 3 (1969) is the second printing, 1970; it also has a waterstain to the end of the upper page edge, causing minor cockling to the pages in that corner. Volume 1 jacket shows light rubbing, minor chipping & edgewear, $5.00 price intact; volume 2 is similar but price-clipped and with a short tear to upper rear panel; volume 3 is also price-clipped and has a large rubberstamped number on the free endsheet, some fading, more rubbing & some edgewear to the jacket.Texts clean; xxii, [2], 422, [1]; viii, 389; viii, 626 pages; notes & index in each volume; a few figures. Size: Large Octavo. Set.
