Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Yevgeny Petrov (1902-1942) were two Soviet prose authors of the 1920s and 1930s. They did much of their writing together, and are almost…always referred to as "Ilf and Petrov". The Golden Calf is a satirical picaresque novel, first published in Russia in 1931. Its main character, Ostap Bender, also appears in a previous novel by the authors called The Twelve Chairs. The title alludes to the "golden calf" of the Bible. The book is bound in the original green boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top of the spine and top corners and heavier bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with staining on the top edge of the text block. There is no inscription. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. There is a small stain on the bottom front corner and bottom of the spine and the spine ends are lightly bumped with a small piece missing from the top of the spine.
