Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Near Fine condition. 6th printing, 169pp. "The leading poet of French symbolism, Mallarme has exercised an enormous influence both on French and on English and American avant-garde writers. In this volume C. F. MacIntyre has translated forty-three of his poems, including the 'Ouverture' and 'Scene' from Herodiade, which was to have been a drama in verse, and the well-known L'Apres-midi d'un Faune, for which Debussy composed his orchestral Prelude. [] Indeed, as MacIntyre suggests, Debussy is probably 'one of the best guides into the mysterious realm of Mallarme.' The poet was more concerned with the music of words, their sounds and vague associations, than with their conventional meanings; one of the elements in his credo was that suggestion and evocation are of greater significance than statement. His syntax is fractious, his meaning frequently enigmatic; and the reader will find MacIntyre's notes helpful in savoring the translations and the original French verses, which appear on facing pages." [publisher copy] "Mallarmé is our greatest poet."--Jean Paul Sartre. Near Fine mass market paperback w/very slight foxing on edges, o/w crisp pages w/brilliant corners & a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine. Design by Rita Carroll, wrappers by Channing Rudd. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Text/BRAND NEW & Bright; bilingual text w/German text printed face to face w/the English. Softcover/VG; sound but tired w/edge & surface rubs & sticker removal scar to front upper corner tip. Lyrically intense German-language poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926) was a guest at the Castle Duino, near Trieste, between October 1911 and May 1912. This 10-poem cycle of Duino Elegies were begun there but not finished until a decade later. Intensely mystical and religious, the work has been described as an "impassioned monologue" of one coming to terms with human existence --- of man's essential loneliness, the perfection of the angels, life and death, love and lovers. The last 4 lines read: "Then we, who think of rising happiness/ would feel the emotion/ that almost confounds us/ when a happy Thing falls". Strong copy despite flaws.

"Mr. MacIntyre has frequently come as close to achieving the impossible as any translator could hope to come. Verlaine's form is so integral a part of his communication that I do not see how the attempt, which Mr. MacIntyre makes, to reproduce his meter and rhyming could honestly have been avoided. All of these renderings have groups of lines which miraculously recreate their originals. Several almost sustain the miracle throughout entire poems. Finally, the preface and notes afford the soundest and most suggestive brief critique of Verlaine's work that I know of in English."---Saturday Review. Pristine paperback w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in lightly-faded spine, quite presentable.
