Condizione: New. Aggiungi al carrelloManila, Jar Collectors (Philippines), [1992]. 199 pp. Num. ills (some col.). Orig. hardcover (ochre yellow / orange cloth with gilt lettering), d./j. 4to. - Light shelfwear: dust jacket sl. discol.; one corner very sl. bumped; front cover with light spot; edges foxed.A rare and groundbreaking English-language reference work. The publication received essential institutional support from the Eugenio Lopez Foundation, Inc., the National Museum of the Philippines, and the Oriental Ceramic Society of the Philippines. The book is considered the definitive standard work on Philippine ceramic storage jars-such as the *martaban*, *gusi*, and *tapayan*. It traces a history dating back to the 9th century, when the first stoneware arrived in the region, coinciding with ceramics from the late Tang Dynasty. The book offers a comprehensive, comparative analysis of the various types of jars found in the Philippines in relation to specimens from the rest of Southeast Asia. It highlights the historical context, maritime trade routes, and diverse nationalities (such as Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese traders) that brought these heavy utilitarian vessels and prestige objects to the archipelago. Furthermore, it describes the cultural and ceremonial functions of stoneware jars among various indigenous Philippine ethnolinguistic groups, focusing on their use in rituals, the preservation of traditional heirlooms, and burial practices.…
