Condizione: Very Good. . Hardcover. Adams & Dart, 1970, 1st edn. with dust cover, in near-mint condition (one small nibble into bottom edge); sage-green cloth in mint condition; 142+11pp biblio, index shows how text books have been useful to the ruling class in moulding general opinion and fostering jingoism. Of all school subjects, history is perhaps most obviously a vehicle for the opinions of the teacher and the section of society which he represents, giving as it does scope for the expression of a wide variety of political, moral and religious ideas. The English educationalists of the last century seem to have been more concerned than those of today to eliminate from textbooks those attitudes which they considered harmful or subversive, and it is apparent that a conscious and directed effort was made to indoctrinate the young with ideas acceptable to the dominant classes of society: in 1806 a history textbook was praised because it was 'expressly designed . to excite in the minds of young children a spirit of loyalty to the king and attachment to the monarchial form of government'; and later, in 1831, another was commended because its achievement was to 'impart correct historical knowledge and at the same time to convey beautiful lessons of morality, the highest and best use of history'. In this book Miss Chancellor, Lecturer in Education History at Coventry College of Education, studies history textbooks of the period 1800-1914, which saw the coming of popular education and mass literacy, and examines the way in which opinions and ideas were passed on to the rising generation, how these ideas were selected and what relation they bore to society as a whole, and the extent to which these textbooks were used to mould the opinions of a future electorate. The book has a foreword by Sir John Newsom. 8¾x5¾". . . . . . Books ship from the US and Ireland.
