The book affords a peep into administrative dynamics for the general reader, and provides nostalgic memories for the older generation of civil servants. It is a must-read for Civil Service aspirants to comprehend what awaits them. Dr Kurian Baby, IAS (Retd) This is not just a book, it is a treasure trove of hoary anecdotes, perceptive quotes and hilarious sketches about one of the most enduring civil services in the world. Mr Verma's decades of service in this Brahminical order sit lightly on him he uses the rapier rather than the broadsword to tackle some of the real problems of public administration. This book will certainly appeal to the author's own endangered tribe but I suspect that non-tribals may find it even more enjoyable! Avay Shukla, IAS (Retd) With the right proportion of levity and gravity, Kush Verma offers a kaleidoscopic perspective of life and work experience of civil servants in India. Behind its impish humour, which makes 'A-Z of the Civil Services' eminently readable, the book is hugely informative and deeply insightful. Harish Mahajan, IAS (Retd) This is a brilliant book written by a brilliant civil servant, both about the various maladies afflicting the services, and about the road to reform. The 'grand literary garnish and flourish', and above all, the linguistic felicity that is the hallmark of this beautiful work, will stay in my mind for long.

The book contains 12 best practices in the MGNREGA Scheme which have emerged as a result of studies carried out in various states, at the village or rural-community level. Each chapter is a case in a best practice which throws light on one particular problem at the site, strategies to overcome it, and implementation status of those strategies. Each chapter also gives out key demographic and geographic data which helps in understanding the extent of impact these best practices have made or are making. Illustrated with lot of diagrams and pictures, this book will be immensely useful to policy makers, researchers, academicians in rural development, rural governance, social sector development, and labour development studies. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing 100 days of wage payment in a financial year to those rural households whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. A vast majority of these individuals are marginal farmers and landless labourers whose incomes are insufficient to support their family. For long, they have been dependent on casual wage works involving migration -- seasonal or on a long-term basis. Keeping such section of the population in mind, the MGNREGA was launched in 2006. The Act seeks to create durable assets and strengthen the livelihood resource base of the rural poor. The single major difference between the previous welfare schemes and MGNREGA is that all the previous schemes and programmes were allocation based while MGNREGA is a demand-based programme. The choice of works suggested in the Act addresses causes of chronic poverty, like drought, deforestation, soil erosion, and so on, so that the process of employment generation is carried out on a sustainable basis. There are numerous examples of such exemplary works being undertaken as a part of this scheme. This volume of case studies is the culmination of an intensive documentation exercise done by a very talented pool of researchers. These case studies have been picked up from various states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and serve as representative specimens of how the benefits of the scheme have been leveraged to improvise upon the natural resources and public goods.
