Reliure de l?poque. 167 x 100 mm. RARE EDITION EN PARTIE ORIGINALE DES ?UVRES DE THEOPHILE DE VIAU (1590-1626). Tchemerzine, V, 864. ® M. Lachvre fait remarquer que la 3eme partie date de 1628 est toute diffrente de celle de l?dition collective de 1628 (Tchemerzine). ® La seconde et la troisime partie laissent supposer une dition diffrente de celle de 1628. La lettre Balzac a t ajoute (Lachvre, Posies des Recueils collectifs, p.373, 12A). ® Thophile de Viau est le pote le plus lu de son poque, un pote pris de libert, dsireux de vivre comme il l?entend et d?crire selon sa fantaisie, pouss par son temprament et non corset par les rgles (Lagarde et Michard ? Hatier). Thophile, un temps au comble de la faveur, suivra son roi en Languedoc, assistera au sige de Clairac, sa ville natale, abjurera en 1622 la religion de son enfance. En vain. Il n?vitera ni le scandale qu?aggravent encore, en 1623, la publication du second recueil de ses ?uvres et surtout celle du Parnasse satyrique, ni ses plus funestes consquences : Thophile, en fuite, est jug par contumace et condamn au bcher. Le 19 aot, l?effigie du pote et ses ?uvres sont brles en place de Grve. Arrt en septembre, conduit la prison du Chtelet, il y vivra de 1623 1625 et y crira quelques-unes de ses pices les plus durables : la ® Lettre de Thophile son frre et la ® Maison de Sylvie , suite de dix odes commence Chantilly, chez son protecteur, Henri de Montmorency. Grce l?intervention de son ami bien-aim, des Barreaux, et la maladresse de ses adversaires, Thophile chappera au bcher. Banni, puis graci, il mourra des suites de sa captivit, un an aprs sa libration, l?ge de 36 ans. ® Ses ® ?uvres potiques connatront au XVIIe sicle un succs tel que la gloire de Malherbe mme en plira. Le meilleur Thophile est-il dans la prose dpouille des lettres, de l? ® Apologie au roi , de la nouvelle latine ® Larissa , des ® Fragments d?une histoire comique , ou bien dans le lyrisme flamboyant de ses tragdies, ® Pasipha et ® Pyrame et ® Thisb ?
