En la bisagra entre los siglos xix y xx y en pleno Sáhara Occidental, un personaje legendario llamado Ma el Ainin, que se caracterizó por su oposición a la penetración europea, construyó la alcazaba de Smara con el fin de establecer un punto de apoyo en las rutas caravaneras. La escasa…predisposición de la población nómada a sedentarizarse y la resuelta decisión de Francia y España a establecerse en el desierto hizo inviable la continuidad del proyecto y, a la muerte de su promotor, éste quedó abandonado. Hasta 1934, momento de la ocupación efectiva por España de la zona, Smara permaneció en el olvido y sólo fue visitada en 1913 por una columna francesa al mando del teniente coronel Mouret, que causó algunos destrozos, aunque no la destruyó y, en 1930, por el aventurero Michel Vieuchange, con el apoyo, desde Marruecos, de su hermano Jean. Michel tomó notas puntuales de su viaje que, tras su fallecimiento, fueron publicadas por su hermano. Inicialmente como crónicas periodísticas y luego, en forma de libro, cuya primera edición prologó Paul Claudel. Voilà plus d'un demi-siècle que j'ai lu ce livre, et j'ai encore exactement en mémoire les péripéties de cette partie d'échecs qui se joue sous nos yeux entre Vieuchange et son destin. » Le fait est que la sécheresse d'une écriture réduite à l'essentiel confère aux cent épisodes de cette histoire déraisonnable et fascinante un caractère proprement inoubliable : nuits passées au fond du désert, campements balayés par le vent, oasis inespérées, rencontres inquiétantes ou fraternelles autour d'un feu de broussailles, découverte émerveillée de cités enterrées par le Temps; mais aussi la soif ardente, les blessures lentes à se cicatriser, la menace des pillards et des mauvais compagnons de route prompts à vendre ou à égorger le voyageur sans défense - et pour finir, l'épuisement, la maladie, la mort. Jamais en notre langue le désert n'avait été décrit, célébré, avec cette âpreté, cette violence - et cette poésie.».
