"Aeussere Gründe haben die Veröffentlichung im Mai 1887 vollendeten Arbeit bis jetzt verzögert." Vorwort Viktor Ritter von Hacker (1852-1933) "gehörte zu den bedeutendsten Schülern Billroths, unter dessen Führung er die Entwicklung der Magen-Darmchirurgie und damit die der modernen Medizin überhaupt erlebte. Er selbst wählte die Chirurgie des Oesophagus, des Magen-Darmtraktes und die plastische Chirurgie als bevorzugte Arbeitsgebiete. Er baute nach anatomischen und physiologischen Vorstudien die Oesophagoskopie - vor allem für die Entfernung von Fremdkörpern - aus und empfahl für Verätzungsstrikturen die seinen Namen tragende Sondierung ohne Ende. 1914 gelang ihm bei einem Patienten mit völliger Verödung der Speiseröhre die Bildung eines Ersatzorganes aus dem Querdarm (antethorakale Dermato-Colo-Oesophagoplastik). Die von ihm angegebene Gastroenterostomia retrocolica posterior (1885) ist eine auch heute noch häufig ausgeführte Palliativoperation. Er versuchte die Bildung einer wirklich schlußfähigen Magenfistel. Von ihm stammt die kollare und dorsale Mediastinotomie bei einer peroesophagealen Phlegmone. Auch die Chirurgie des Pharynx, der Kardia, der Trachea wußte er zu bereichern.
