Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Second Edition. Second impression of the second edition, published in 1948 by the Hogarth Press. The book was first published by J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd. in 1929, but wasn't published again until this Hogarth Press edition in 1948. Second edition stated on the printer's page, with Second Impression on the title page. ***Near fine in bright yellow cloth-covered boards with red titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Red top edge stain by the publisher is unfaded and clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions and beautifully clean pages with no foxing. No creasing or tears. Binding square with no reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, whixh has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s 6d net. The dustwrapper is complete, without any creases, chips or tears - just very light edge wear and some browning to the spine. Dustwrapper otherwise clean and bright. ***190mm x130mm. 269 pages. ***'A rich mosaic, composed from the lives -- on the job and at home -- of a group of employees in a Birmingham factory. Adventurous in technique, warmly human and humorous in its material, Mr. Green's second novel shows him already a master of dialogue'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper - interesting as Henry Green had at that time published eight novels, so the publisher probably used the original 'blurb' from the 1929 edition) ***'Henry Green was the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke (29 Oct 1905 - 13 Dec 1973), an English writer best remembered for the novels "Party Going", "Living" and "Loving". He published a total of nine novels between 1926 and 1952.' ***'"Living" is a work of sharp social observation, documenting the lives of Birmingham factory workers in the inter-war boom years. It is considered a modern classic by scholars, and appears on many university syllabi. The language is notable for its deliberate lack of conjunctives to reflect a Birmingham accent. As well, very few articles are used, allegedly to mimic foreign languages (such as Arabic) that use them infrequently. It is considered a work of Modernist literature. The novel has been acclaimed for making Green "an honorary member of a literary movement to which he never belonged", i.e. the genre of proletarian literature. Despite his class origin and politics, the novel has been acclaimed as "closer to the world of the working class than those of some socialist or worker-writers themselves"' (Wiki) ***A beautiful copy of the second edition of Henry Green's second novel "Living". Copies of this edition are very hard to find now in the original dustwrapper, and especially so in such nice condition. Of interest to collectors of the work of Henry Green and the Hogarth Press. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
