Le jeune béluga est brun, puis gris et il deviendra blanc entre l'âge de 10 et 20 ans. Comme exception à la règle que les troupeaux de Bélugas, dans cette région, se composent d'animaux adultes, on peut mentionner le témoignage de Napoléon Boudreault, pêcheur de Carleton. Vers le 20 mai 1934, il a pris, dans sa «pêche à saumon», trois Bélugas dont un était un jeune individu, d'environ 7 pieds.
