Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condizione: NEAR FINE. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Second Edition. xxviii, [4], 3-598 pp. + colophon, 187 in-text figures and photos. Navy pebbled cloth, gilt spine lettering, 70-lb 'Imperial Enamel' paper. Light foxing to fore and tail edges, owner's stamp to FFEP, exceedingly clean and sharp otherwise with tight binding. DJ somewhat tattered with a few large tears and 1.5' chip at head of spine, smaller chip to tail. An uncommonly sharp and tight copy with scarce dust jacket. One of the most infamous texts in the history of medicine, this second and completely revised edition disseminated and popularized Freeman's "Icepick Lobotomy."?Freeman's goal was to establish a technique that could be used on any psychiatric ward on short notice without any surgical training, medical apparatus, or even anesthesia. Freeman claimed that "his ice-pick surgery was as simple to use against psychotic misfits as penicillin against bacterial infections, and he prescribed it for radicals, homosexuals, and other "deviants" (Joanne Ellison Rodgers, *Psycho-Surgery*). "There were so few controls over what went on that we don't even have an accurate count of how many had lobotomies. Estimates . range from 50,000 to 150,000 worldwide" - Scull & Favreau, "A Chance to Cut iIs a Chance to Cure.". …

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Black textured cloth with yellow spine lettering, impressed pub. logo to bottom back outer corner, near Fine but spine lettering quite dull. Coloured f/piece + xxviii + half-title+598 + colophon, 156 text figs, mostly photos of patients or anatomical (inc. X-rays), some of equipment and a number of charts, one pair coloured (before and after paintings by patient). Gutter between f/piece and t.p. was opening, now re-closed and sealed with thin strip of transparent archival tear repair tape, but remains a little weak, four or five pages a have two or three small faint gray spots of little consequence, otherwise clean, tight and unmarked, no tanning or indications of provenance. Greatly expanded from the 1942 1st edition and based on about 500 cases. A comprehensive account of the methods and results of pre-frontal and transorbital lobotomy. Now apparently very rare, more so than the 1st edition. A key text for fully understanding this now notorious episode in the history of psychiatry by its leading evangelical proponent, ironically published in the year Watts split from him in opposition to the cruelty of the technique. (Lobotomy and leucotomy are synonyms by the way) 16.5 cm x 26 cm.…
