Where the time has gone, I m not quite sure, but that number seems big enough to me to warrant a celebration. So for the next four issues of our gallery magazine, we will be taking the opportunity to look back at some of the extraordinary things, people, places and events that have brought us where we are today. In this, our Spring issue, we look back ten years on from our unforgettable visit to Jingdezhen, the Chinese Porcelain Capital of the World and home of the studio of Japanese potter Takeshi Yasuda. Elsewhere, you ll see the spirit of the late Stanley Jones alive again in the prints of Barbara Hepworth and Paula Rego, which he so expertly ushered into the world. An issue of remembrances; I hope you enjoy it.

I find that the great benefit of giving oneself too much to do is the diminishing interest one has in milestones. We are quite used to moving quickly from one thing to the next at the gallery, as many of you will know. So it took me by surprise to learn that this year we have surpassed our 60th pottery exhibition monograph, and that this will be our 30th outing of the magazine. As is so often the case, the connections in this latest issue are organic but plentiful. Anne Mette Hjortshøj and John Piper confront tradition with modernity in very different ways. The prints of Chloe Cheese, who as a child watched Edward Bawden working with her mother, sit alongside his London markets. And space is newly arranged, to mysterious effect, in works by gallery artists Chris Wood and Oliver Bancroft. Here s to another 30 more.

We re seeing 2022 out with our last magazine of the year and what a year it has been. Through times shocking, disconcerting, and occasionally beyond farce, art has kept us rooted these past twelve months. In this latest issue, Florian Gadsby ex-apprentice of Lisa Hammond and potter in his own right reflects on Lisa s teaching with a review of our latest ceramics show, while David Whiting looks forward to a forthcoming 2023 exhibition: the weird and wistful worlds of John Copley and Ethel Gabain, partners in life and in printmaking. We feature two dedications to major artists: Ceri Richards homage to Beethoven, our own to the late, great Brian Catling. And our editor turns his attention to the lifelong relationship with our fellow animals.

On casting an eye at the contents of our Autumn 2022 issue, we appear to have made a literary special. We open with an archival interview in memory of the dearly missed Mel Gooding, one of our finest art critics. Two of our art features Paul Nash s extraordinary illustrations for Thomas Browne s beloved Urne Buriall and Kitaj s collaboration with the American poet Robert Creeley see artists engaging deeply with their respective texts. And Dr Jo Balmer has kindly reviewed our reissue of Vale Royal, poet Aidan Dun s first major work, published by Goldmark nearly thirty years ago. Plus, there is news of an upcoming Gaudier-Brzeska epic of our own: a new catalogue raisonné, due for publication this winter. With Lisa Hammond and Lee Kang-hyo representing ceramics, there are vessels aplenty here too. Much to enjoy, as the days of Autumn draw in.

There is a feeling of hope emanating from our Spring 2022 issue whether it is the aspirations of the artists of Abstraction Création, looking to build a better future, the humanity of the images Anthony Gross brought back from WWII, the joyful colour of Dora Holzhandler s paintings, or the news that Coventry Cathedral, once risen from the ashes, will be celebrating its diamond jubilee this May.

Three very different artists three very different women take centre stage in our Winter 2021 issue: Esther Peretz-Arad and her fascinating record of the young mothers and workers of pre and post-state Tel Aviv; Morwenna Thistlethwaite, a virtually unknown St Ives artist, whose work skirted the divide between domestic familiarity and unease; and Anne Mette Hjortshøj tells us about the red clay she fell in love with on the shores of Bornholm over 20 years ago. Plus, an exploration of the English character in its art and its slipware pottery, and, in the work of Raoul Dufy and Jankel Adler, two distinct artists dealing with the anxieties of WWII in the only way they could.

Japan and France seem to provide the focal points for our latest Autumnal issue. Two icons of French art the poster designer Jules Chéret and the multitalented Sonia Delaunay bring a riot of Parisian colour to these pages, while Ikebana expert Rie Day furnishes Ken Matsuzaki's pots with her arrangements and Koichiro Isezaki trailblazes new work from ancient Bizen. Two dates for your diary: 27th November for our Phil Rogers memorial exhibition opening, and 4th December for a major retrospective of the mid-century Polish master Jankel Adler.

Our summer schedule at Goldmark is so busy this year we ve had more shows than room in our latest magazine. June saw the opening of our extraordinary exhibition of assemblages by artist Richard James. July will feature not one but two blockbuster shows: new pots by Ken Matsuzaki and a career retrospective of abstract veteran Graham Boyd. And come September, we have our first solo exhibition of pots by Japanese Bizen potter, Koichiro Isezaki, and a return of gallery favourite, the inimitable Oliver Bancroft. Do contact us for details, and in the meantime enjoy some seasonal colour in our Summer Issue.

What a strange summer it has been weather as wild and unpredictable as this year has proved so far. Since the start of lockdown, the Goldmark Gallery has put on an astonishing seven exhibitions in as many months; all, delightfully, certified successes. It has been a great joy to share the warmth, wit and humanity of art and ceramics with our customers over the last six months, remotely or otherwise. Two September shows bring summer to a close: expressive slipware from Jean-Nicolas Gérard, the potter s potter from Provence, with a heartfelt exhibition review by ceramics expert Sebastian Blackie; and 50 years an artist for Jenny Grevatte. Elsewhere, there is plenty of food for thought and feasts for eyes. We take a whistlestop tour of the life of James Gillray, caricaturist par excellence, whose Lady Strathmore is trying to distract you on the opposite page. Two highly personal works of art David Jones illustrations to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Leonard Rosoman s double portrait of Lillian Browse show us artists working in intensely difficult, yet productive, chapters of their lives. And in the work of Julian Trevelyan and Alan Davie, experiment, exploration, and spontaneity abound. Something for everyone, I hope.

Collaboration seems to be the unexpected theme of this issue. Two veterans of British printmaking, Ron King of Circle Press and Chris Prater of Kelpra Studios, were geniuses at coaxing the very best from their co-workers, while neither Picasso's Diurnes nor Schmidt-Rottluff's Der Rote Hahn woodcuts could have existed without their creative partners. So in the collective spirit, we've brought them together for you to enjoy alongside a host of new articles in this latest autumnal issue. With contributions by David Buckman, Mike Dodd and Christoper P Wood, we hope you find something to enjoy.

The life and spirit of John Clare, one of our great recorders of the natural world, rests at the heart of our Summer 2023 issue. We look back, 30 years on, from Rigby Graham s retracing of Clare s steps when the poet absconded from an asylum in Essex, and pay tribute to Ronald Blythe who died earlier this year, ex-President of the Clare Society and a great naturalist in his own right. Van Gogh s private reading (before he was himself committed) features in our colour column. And two greats of British art, Paula Rego and Elisabeth Frink, loom large as writers Laura Gascoigne and Caroline Wiseman extoll their projects in print. Plenty to enjoy in the summer sun.

I can scarcely believe that we have already reached the 25th issue of the Goldmark Magazine. Since we began publishing our quarterly offering in 2016, it has become a small but vital part of the gallery s many ongoing projects. I am a firm believer in the phrase Hasten slowly the quicker to arrive. Over the past six years, like the gallery itself, this magazine has changed gradually, sometimes imperceptibly. But with this milestone, we have decided to take a chance to refresh our presentation: a new, and clearer, contents section at the front, and a collection of highlights new work, exhibitions, and reviews at the back. I hope, as always, that you find something to enjoy within its pages.

Christopher P. Wood reveals his fascination with ephemera in our latest interview one he shares with the major players of 1960s Brit Pop. And in our ongoing colour series, we delve deep into the mysterious history of celadon. A little something for everyone in this festive season.

We are also delighted to introduce you to the art of the late Esther Peretz-Arad, an artist of exceptional talent whose work is little known outside her native Israel. Plus lots more.

It is always in the last minutes of publication hurriedly pulling together articles and images that the resonances between pieces reveal themselves. In this, our Winter issue to usher in 2020, there are a strange few: cadavers of very different kinds are at the heart of works by Sidney Nolan and our very own Ian Wilkinson. We find out that C.F. Tunnicliffe and gallery artist John Farrington shared a background as pig and cow-men. And in works by Kuhn and Swoon, both new to our magazine, we have joyful expressions of humanity at its most caring. Enjoy these, and our welcome back to Svend Bayer ahead of his March 2020 show, in this latest offering.

It seems appropriate, as summer gives way to autumn, that our October issue turns to themes of earth and wood; whether it s the generousness of Jean-Nicolas Gérard s earthenware pottery, Anthony Gross paintings of living landscapes, or the earthiness of Frank Dobson s nude sculptures. Our feature on the Goldmark Atelier s latest venture offers a fascinating insight into the woodblocks of John Nash, while wood in various guises marks just one of the elemental refrains of the work of Joe Tilson. Enjoy these and more in our latest autumnal offering.
