Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. 23 cm. Bound in contemporary quarter black morocco over marbled blue boards. Gilt stamped spine. Very good binding. Blue marbled endpapers. Scuff cover on edge. XII, 571 p. Tinted lithographic frontispiece, tinted lithographic plate, folding map, 4 pp. of musical notations. Scattered foxing to plates, title-page, and prelims. Hugues-Algernon Weddell was a botanist at the Museum d'histoire naturelle de Paris. He journeyed to Brazil and Peru on the orders King Louis-Phillipe in 1834-7 with Count Francis de Castelnau. He returned to the region in 1851 with Charles Borniche and Martial de Herrypon in search of Cinchona "fever bark", the plant used to make quinine, a medicine to combat Malaria. Weddell was able to find 15 varieties and successfully germinate them at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The cultivation and spread of Cinchona, and thus quinine, allowed European settlement and imperial domination of the tropical / Malarial zones of the world in the later half of the 19th century. Weddell's voyage is one of the most significant voyages to South America in the 19th century. Palau 374410. Provenance: From the collection of United States Ambassador and diplomat, Alexander Weddell (1876-1948). Weddell was US Ambassador to Argentina from 1933-1938. Engraved book plate from Virginia House Museum.

Francis de Castelnau (also known as François Laporte) was born in London, the illegitimate son of the Countess of Mesnard-La Barotière. He studied natural history in Paris and, from 1843 to 1847, crossed South America from Peru to Brazil with two botanists and a taxidermist. Following the Amazon and La Plata river systems, the expedition yielded considerable scientific results in zoology, botany, mineralogy, and ethnography, alongside astronomical and hydrographical observations. Castelnau later served as French consul in Bahia, Siam, and Melbourne. The beautifully coloured plates make this a highly desired work for bibliophiles.

In 1845 Weddell left the expedition in Paraguay and travelled on his own to Peru and Bolivia to study the genus Cinchona. Three years later he "returned to France with with the most valuable contribution to the materials of the Flora of the High Andes which had ever been brought together" (Hemsley & Pearson). Weddell returned to South America in 1851, at the head of a commercial expedition to investigate the gold deposits in the Tipuani valley and, of course, collect plants. In his travel account he extensively describes the botany and zoology of Bolivia, as well as his misfortunes in acquiring an alpaca, meetings with indigenous people, a ball on the account of a Bolivian wedding and "the filthy horrors of a Bolivian kitchen" (Blackwood's magazine), including several recipes.Hugh (or Hugues) Algernon Weddell (1819-1877) was an Anglo-French physician and botanist, known for his studies on South American flora.
