Katherine Merritte Schneider Yates (1865-1951) wrote numerous children?s books, both under her own name and the pen name E. E. Steven, including Kat and Kopy Kat. The story in this volume involves two Menehunes, mythical dwarves who were supposed to have inhabited Hawaii in ancient times. Born in Missouri, Audley Barnard Wells (1887-1971) moved to Los Angeles around 1900, where she taught drawing and art in the city and suburban schools. She illustrated several books for the publisher, Paul Elder. This copy was printed by the Tomoye Press and is a good example of a finely printed book. The illustrations by Audley B. Wells are simply exquisite! It is rare to find this book in such good condition and with its dust jacket.

Dj with some very small paper loss in the folds. === Ships from Hawaii with free Priority Mail upgrade. === From Yates' foreword: "The Menehunes are a mythical race of little brown people supposed to have inhabited the Hawaiian Islands in olden times. They were very tiny folk, measuring their stature by inches instead of by feet, and their mission seems to have been that of being helpful to men; but they could work only at night, and had to drop whatever they were doing when the elepaio bird called at dawn, and the task, no matter how far from completion, could never be taken up again by them. They are used in this little tale merely as a fanciful vehicle to carry the words of the Loving People; and the local color, merely as a setting for a world-wide phase of human life." K.M.Y.
