Spine faded with the gold lettering rubbed and dimmed; fading extends slightly onto the top edge of the front board. Binding is tight. Light soiling along the edges of the text block. Pages lightly toned but otherwise unmarked. From the library of psychiatrist Jurgen Ruesch (1909-1995), with his stamp "Jurgen Ruesch / Dr. med." on the front free endpaper. Ruesch trained in medicine at the University of Zurich and went on to a distinguished career at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute of the University of California, San Francisco; he is best known to historians of psychiatry and communication theory for his collaboration with Gregory Bateson on "Communication: The Social Matrix of Psychiatry" (1951), a foundational text of the Palo Alto group on communication and family systems. A standard German-language reference work on psychotherapy as it stood in 1927, gathering chapter-length contributions from leading figures of interwar German and Austrian psychiatry: Karl Birnbaum on the theoretical foundations of psychotherapy; Ernst Jolowicz on suggestive therapy; Gustav R.
