Studenten en loopbaanbegeleiders richten zich vaak op 'reflectie doen' in plaats van 'reflectief zijn'. Reflectief zijn houdt in dat men openstaat voor nieuwe inzichten en ervaringen, wat begint met het stilstaan bij persoonlijke ervaringen die ons raken. Zowel studenten als begeleiders missen de ervaring van reflectie die is geworteld in 'embeddedness in being', zoals Norman E. Amundson het beschrijft. Paradoxaal genoeg zijn het vaak onzeker makende, grensverleggende ervaringen die ons kunnen aanzetten tot openheid. Deze ervaringen maken ons kwetsbaar, en hoewel het een natuurlijke reactie is om deze kwetsbaarheid te verbergen, kan ze ook een bron van kracht zijn. Kwetsbaarheid wordt kracht wanneer men de moed heeft om niet te vluchten voor onzekerheid. Deze moed ontwikkelt zich in een dialoog met begeleiders die de negatieve gevoelens van onzekerheid durven te accepteren en creatieve manieren bieden om kwetsbaarheid om te zetten in nieuwe inzichten en daadkracht. Om reflectie niet slechts een wilskrachtige activiteit te laten zijn, is het essentieel om ruimte en tijd te creeren voor contemplatieve reflectie, waarbij openheid en receptiviteit van zowel de leerling als de begeleider cruciaal zijn. Er moet ruimte zijn voor angst, pijn en het 'nog niet weten'.
