Green cloth blocked in triple blind with green letters on the front cover and gilt letters on the spine. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, spine slightly faded, gilt somewhat dulled, all illustrations present and in fine condition, textblock every so slightly canted, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. William Caine was an English author, almost invariably of spoofish light fiction and plays. Bildad the Quill-Driver is a book of Arabian fantasy. Henry Mayo Bateman was a British humorous artist and cartoonist. He was noted for his "The Man Who." series of cartoons, featuring comically exaggerated reactions to minor and usually upper-class social gaffes, such as "The Man Who Lit His Cigar Before the Royal Toast". A centenary celebration of his work was exhibited at Festival Hall on London's south bank in 1987. Bateman's illustrations in this book are very characteristic of his work, as well as very charming.
