hardcover. first edition. 8vo 192pp. Introductions by Hubert Humphrey and Sargent Shriver. from front flap: "Their ages range from eighteen to eighty-six. Their skills vary from the law to plumbing to literature. Many work eighteen hours a day, seven days a week, for a monthly stipend of $50. Their homes for one year or more are the slums of Boston, an Apache reservation, the hollows of Appalachia--wherever the poor reside. All have one thing in common: they are VISTA Volunteers. Warriors for the Poor is a graphic, vital, and, at times, moving report on VISTA, America's first federally sponsored, domestic people-to-people program." #01605.
