Dr. Ackerman is: Board Certified in both Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology, is a Graduate of the University Of Louisville School Of Medicine. He did a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky, and was Chief Resident in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and he did a Fellowship in Pain Medicine at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas and is one of a few fellowship trained pain management physicians in Arkansas. Dr. Ackerman was: Nominated previously for the Southern Medical Society Medical Research Award, Bristol-Meyers Squibb award for distinguished achievement in Pain Research was a recipient of the Karl Koehler research grant from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. He (as an expert in RSD) is a coauthor of the CRPS chapter in the AMA Guides to Disease and injury Causation (2nd Edition). He has been a guest speaker at medical school department meetings, Workman's Compensation meetings and academic symposiums throughout the country and at international meetings as well as an Arkansas Bar Association meeting. His research has been featured in the National media (Chicago Tribune and National television). He published seventeen books and many chapters in multiple medical textbooks including the AMA best seller: The AMA Guides to Injury and Disease Causation (First and Second editions). He authored 137 scientific articles in prestigious medical journals such as: Anesthesia Analgesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management, The Journal of Hand Surgery etc. He was selected recently for "Top Doc 2017". He has been on the Editorial Board of two medical journals as well. He was a Lt. Col in the US Army Medical Corps and Chief of Anesthesiology of two Army Medical Center Hospitals. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. There is no unanimity on what causes RSD. Is it an autoimmune disease, a psychological illness, etc.? This can be a problem in work related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, medical malpractice claims, other bodily injuries etc. where medical causation is an issue. In other words, who is responsible for the payment of the medical claims and lost wages related to RSD? What is known however is that an opportune diagnosis must be done in a timely fashion and a sympathetic blockade if medically indicated must be performed within 16 weeks from the date of injury to recover from this extremely painful entity. Furthermore, early mobilization and range of motion are extremely important to decrease disability if CRPS is suspected as a possible diagnosis. This item is printed on demand. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. When you take a medication, you expect it to give you benefit. For example, if you have a headache, you would want to take a headache medication, and you would expect then to have relief of your headache. Most individuals realize that this does not always happen. Not every medication works for everyone who takes it, and this it is completely normal. A medication that works for your neighbor may not work for you. The purpose of this book is to provide you with some insight as to why medicines do not always work. New drugs and other modalities are being introduced with increasing frequency. A patient needs to partner with his or her doctor and become involved in their pharmacologic treatment. The reason for this book is to give a patient the basic information necessary to rationally discuss his or her medication failure with the treating physician. A medication is a drug used to treat an illness. The drug that you take goes from outside your body to a specific area in your body called a target receptor. This is the area on your body here your medication is supposed to work (heart, lung, etc.). This drug-receptor action is dependent on your specific pharmacodynamics and kinetics. Pharmacodynamics is the science of how a drug works for your body. This is called the mechanism of action of the drug which determines how a drug gives you pain relief. Pharmacokinetics, on the other hand, is the study of how drugs enter your body; reach their site of action (your heart, brain, etc.), and how they are eliminated from your body. Drug absorption is a drug's progress from the time it's administered until it reaches your blood systemic circulation.Drug absorption occurs when drugs are taken into your body. Drugs must readily dissolve in fat to pass through the lining of your gastrointestinal tract. The stomach is highly acidic, which favors absorption of weakly acidic drugs. The small intestine is slightly alkaline, which favors the absorption of weakly basic drugs. The small intestine is the major site of drug absorption due to its large surface area. Bioavailability describes what proportion of the administered drug is available to produce a pharmacologic response. Some factors influencing drug bioavailability include how rapidly and completely the drug will dissolve and will be absorbed through your gastrointestinal tract. Factors influencing drug bioavailability are: the presence of food may affect the dissolution and absorption of drugs, excretion in your feces, a deficiency or absence of gastric hydrochloric acid, which prevents gastric absorption of acidic drugs and prevents dissolution of basic drugs. Drug distribution is also important for you to understand. Drug distribution means that the drug that you took ultimately has to go somewhere such as your brain heart, etc. It may go to many other areas before it gets to where you want it to go. In other words, it may go to many areas in your body. The purpose of this book is to explain to the reader that it is not unusual for a drug to occasionally not be effective. The purpose of this book is to attempt to alleviate the frustration experienced when a medication does not always work and attempts to explain why a medication will not work. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. One's pain perception usually differs from others. This observation is why a "one size fits all" to pain treatment does not exist. This process slows down when one becomes an adult and gets progressively slower with age. Some cells like those in the brain and nerves do not continue to grow. Our bodies reflect our genetic capacity to adapt and repair, as well as tolerate the cumulative damage from disease processes. With advancing age, all of the body systems eventually demonstrate reduced efficiency, slowed building and replacement and actual loss of tissue. There is a gradual loss of bone tissue and the reduced tissue loss may be permanent. When a person is born, cells in the body duplicate rapidly which enables growth resiliency of blood vessels. A chromosome is a cell is a long strand of DNA in it. At the end of a chromosome is a telomere, which acts like a bookend. Telomeres keep chromosomes protected and prevent them from binding with other DNA. Many cells in the body need to replicate to keep the body healthy. When the telomeres fail one's health is affected and this failure is related to aging and chronic pain perception in some instances. This item is printed on demand. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Considerable evidence demonstrates substantial disparities in the prevalence, treatment, progression and outcomes of pain related conditions. Elucidating the mechanisms underlying these group differences is of crucial importance in reducing and eliminating disparities in the pain experience. Over recent years, accumulating confirmation has identified a variety of processes, from neurophysiological factors to structural elements of the healthcare system, which may contribute to shaping individual differences in pain. Diversity refers to human characteristics that are different from your own and from those of groups to which you belong. Diversity may be visible or invisible. Visible diversity is external and includes age, race, ethnicity, gender, and physical attributes. Invisible diversity includes those attributes that are not readily seen, such as work experience, marital status, educational background, parental status, income, religious beliefs and affiliations, geographic location, or socioeconomic status. Patient populations in most clinical settings are demographically di-verse. The diversity of approaches for lumbar spine pain for example suggests perhaps that the ideal technique has not been determined for the treatment of low back pain. Multidisciplinary approaches to the manage-ment of low back pain for example may be expected to be most beneficial in diverse populations as opposed to only one single therapy. The nature of the particular patient population being treated enhances our understanding of potential differences in the definition of symptom issues, variation of clinical practice, and cultural and psychosocial influences. It is unfortunate that many academic pain text books do not address diversity in pain treatments and only present a "one size fits all approach". Human characteristics imply diversity and therefore, medical treatments must address diversity to be effective. However, the question that remains to be answered: is anyone listening?
