Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 volumes. xiii+[3]+458 pages with 3 plates including frontispiece, folding map and music score of "Dog Dance of the Sioux"; vi+156 pages with 4 plates (2 in color), tables (3 folding) and appendix. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in full black leather with gilt lettering to spine. (Howes K20; Wagner- Camp IV: 26b:1; Graff 2280; Pilling 2066; Streeter 1785; Field 949) First British edition. William Hypolitus (or Hippolitus, or Hypolite) Keating was an American geologist. His father, Baron John Keating, of Irish ancestry, had been an officer in the French army in the West Indies and had settled in Wilmington, Delaware. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, and then in France and Switzerland, where he studied mining. In 1822, he became Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He is perhaps best known for his work on the staff of Stephen Long's expedition to the Great Lakes in 1823, an account of which he published in 1824. In the account he first hypothesized the existence of what is now known as Lake Agassiz. Formed at the end of the last ice age during the retreat of the great North American glaciers Lake Agassiz was, at its peak, much larger than any currently existing lake. The tremendous significance of the discovery has come to be appreciated in recent decades because the draining of Lake Agassiz into the North Atlantic Ocean is now generally thought to have been responsible for sudden periods of cooling of Northern Hemisphere climate at the end of the Pleistocene. The most dramatic of these periods of cooling is known as the Younger Dryas. Condition: Minor tears at map folds, foxing to title and frontispiece, some offset darkening to title else a very good set.…

His work with Long represented one of the first topographic and mineralogical surveys of the Great Lakes, for which he was given responsibility for compiling and publishing the results as Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River : Lake Winnepeek, Lake of the Woods, &c., &c. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. 2 volumes. 8vo.,(8 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Half-title. Engraved frontispiece, seven plates, including two of shells with contemporary hand-colour, and one large folding map hand-coloured in outline ". of the Country embracing the Route of the Expedition of 1823 commanded by Major S.H. Long", and three folding letterpress tables (some minor and occasional spotting). Early 20th-century half ochre morocco gilt, uncut by Morrell (extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: with the 20th-century bookplates of Henry Dutton Thrall on the front paste-down of each volume. First English edition, first published in Philadelphia in 1824. "In the spring of 1823 Keating was recruited as geologist and mineralogist for an expedition formed by the War Department and commanded by Major Stephen Long. The territory to be explored included the valleys of the Minnesota and Red rivers and the country between the Red River and Lake Superior (now known as Minnesota and lower Manitoba). The party included Samuel Seymour, an artist; J. Edward Calhoun, a topographer; and Thomas Say, an entomologist. After a six-month, 4,500-mile journey, Keating returned to Philadelphia in October 1823 and prepared the expedition's notes for publication. They appeared in the fall of 1824 as Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River. This publication was widely read, and it was reprinted in London and translated into German. Although the geological observations were criticized as superficial because of the rapidity with which the party traveled, the descriptions of the Native Americans met by the group are of considerable interest" (DNB). "The work is almost a cyclopaedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention, or record of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statement regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people" (Field). A comparative vocabulary of the Sauk, Sioux, Chippewa, and Cree tongues is given in an appendix, and one of the plates assigns musical notation for the Dog Dance of the Sioux and the Scalp Dance of the Chippewa.
