Front cover is completely detached from the text block and has been mounted on a piece of teal cardboard; masking-tape residue is visible along all four edges of the mounted cover (approximately 1 inch along the spine edge and approximately 1/3 inch along the other three edges). Cover shows heavy edge wear, dark spotting, and chipping, but the Morey artwork is fully visible. Pages are heavily tanned and brittle with edge chipping and tears, but all are present and attached; text is unmarked. A reading copy only. Gray paper covers toned with some light soiling and staining, several small patches of surface peeling, creasing and curling at corners, minor chipping at front cover's top fore-edge corner; spine paper toned with shallow chipping at ends and short tear at head of rear joint. Faint to light moisture staining and associated slight curling at lower fore-edge corners of pages 101 to rear free endpaper. Past owner's name/address ink inscription on front cover's blank verso. [very light shelfwear, very faint dampstain on front board (not affecting interior in any way); jacket shows minor wear at edge and corners, a bit of fading at spine]. Novel set in Bangkok in the late 1940s, revolving around the "wife of an American diplomat [who] has the remote charm of a very beautiful woman who knows what it means to be lover instead of beloved. Her marriage to Jay Sheppard has been a second-best, kept alive because he wanted it so. But now, in the restless heat of the mango season -- those sweltering, intense days when the fruit is ripe and nature arrives at its own climax -- Nora comes to a decision which may mean a new life." The author, per her jacket bio, had spent time in Southeast Asia (including Bangkok) with her own husband, who was -- wait for it -- an American diplomat. This was her first, and apparently only, novel.
