A long list of subscribers names includes George Washington, Robert Morris, Charles Carrol, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and 16 pages more, listing both their names and places of residence. Pagination begins with the title page and runs through page 91, plus an index page. Includes a letter to George Washington from North Carolina and his response; Observations on the climate of Pennsylvania by Benjamin Rush; Letter on western forts by Noah Webster, 5 pages on complexion (race) by Samuel Stanhope Smith; report on drunkards in Pennsylvania; a column on the magnanimity of a certain Indian in Virginia; on Protestantism by Pacifus; the benefits of exercise; description of Pennsylvania by William Penn; Duche on medical society in Delaware; Benjamin Franklin on electricity in paralytic cases; Shadrich Ricketson on cultivation of the poppy in New York; account of the settlement of Plymouth; essay on smuggling; theory of earthquakes by John Winthrop; anonymous essay on Free Trade, by a citizen of Philadelphia (Pelatiah Webster); John Morgan on agriculture vs manufacture; speech by William Pinkney on relief for slavery; a letter on slavery by a negro (author still unknown); Fanaticism in South Carolina; an Ode by Samuel Knox; an epitaph by William Pierce; brief notes on current events in US and UK. This copy has no covers and no endpapers; spine slightly cocked, showing that it was removed from a larger volume. Text block still securely bound, with a gloss of (probably) modern adhesive on the spine. Early ownership name Dr. Rustin on the title page. There is no Rustin listed among the subscribers. An extraordinary collection - printed just months into President Washington's first term and establishment of the Constitution as foundational document of the United States - with contributions by founding fathers themselves, some published here for the first time.
