Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. xv+342 with frontispiece, appendixes, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") issued in brown cloth with gilt lettering. Edited and translated into English by J W T Allen, compiled in memorian with notes and studies by various Makerere colleagues, African, American, Asian, British and European. 1st edition. The present work began as a new edition of the Swahili text by J W T Allen, using modern orthography and developments in Swahili philology since the turn of the century (1903), when the volume was first published. It is complete and unabridged, except for the omission of a summary of the Law of Islam on certain matters. The Africans who wrote the Desturi were "pure Swahili persons" around the town of Bagamoyo in Tanzania, directly opposite Zanzibar Island. Int eh 1890s they were asked by Dr Carl Velten, a German linguist, to write down the traditions and customs of their people, which they did in Swahili, using Arabic script. From his introduction to the volumes he published in 1903, it is clear that Dr Velten was the compiler, and that a good part of Swahili prose, who had also reworked the whole and given it homogeneity and distinction of style. This master was Bwana Mtoro bin Mwinyi Bakari of Bagamoyo, who is recorded by Dr Velten as being Lektor at the Oriental Seminar in Berlin, where he taught Swahili. Condition: Dust jacket back fold over edge chipped along edge, else a very good copy in like jacket.

The journey west, from the Missouri River to the Pacific coast, was made by some quarter of a million Americans during the 1840s and 1850s, and stands as one of the great human adventure stories of all time. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, California, in 1848, the immigration took on an urgency and a scope that would never be matched again, though the numbers of migrants was eventually equaled over time by the slower pace of those who went to Oregon and followed later to California to put down more permanent roots. This work draws heavily from the diaries of 17 men and women who made the four month, 2,000 mile trek to California during 1849 and 1850. The text is divided into three main parts. Part One covers travel from the Missouri River to Fort Laramie, Part Two covers Fort Laramie to Fort Hall and Salt Lake City, and Part Three covers the trek from there to the Sierra Nevadas. Each part has chapters that detail specific parts of the trail, sites, or locations where the migrants found something important to write about. The diarists' accounts tell of the adventures, hardships, desires, concerns, deprivations, sicknesses, deaths along the way, and of crossing the last great obstacle--the "Elephant," as many of them called it--the high ridge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
