First edition. 230pp. This is the story of part of Earl Weinstock's life, as narrated to Herbert Wilner. In Nazi-occupied Roumania, where Weinstock was born and grew up, he escaped a mass slaughter of Jews only to face deportation in a crowded cattle-train. In a concentration camp he learned Marxism from one of his fellow victims; and in 'liberated' post-war Roumania realized - slowly and painfully - the realities of Soviet policy. Through the local underground movement he arranged an escape for himself and his mother; and after a stay in a D.P. camp where an ex-Nazi officer taught him English, he reached America. The book is bound in the original brick-red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine ends are bumped with nicks at the top of the spine and a tear of about 1/4" on the top rear spine corner. There is also a tear of about 1/4" on the top front edge.
