Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'The Red Men of Nigeria' is a detailed ethnographic study based on James Rhodes Wilson-Haffenden's extended residence among the diverse tribes of Central Nigeria. The work primarily focuses on the Fulani people-often referred to as the 'Red Men'-as well as neighboring pagan communities, providing a rare window into their complex social and cultural landscapes during the early twentieth century. The author meticulously documents a wide array of tribal practices, ranging from pastoral traditions and nomadic habits to more striking customs such as headhunting. The narrative explores the spiritual lives of these peoples, detailing their religious beliefs and ritualistic behaviors with the eye of an attentive observer. Beyond simple observation, the book examines the intricate social structures that governed these communities, offering insights into their governance, kinship, and daily survival in the Nigerian interior. As a significant contribution to the study of West African societies, 'The Red Men of Nigeria' serves as an important historical record of cultural traditions and lifestyles that have undergone immense transformation. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in anthropology, African history, and the rich tapestry of Nigeria's indigenous heritage. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'The Red Men of Nigeria' is an insightful and detailed ethnographic study focusing primarily on the Fulani people and their neighbors in Northern Nigeria. Written by an officer within the administrative service, the work provides a comprehensive account of the social, cultural, and spiritual lives of these nomadic and semi-nomadic groups during the early 20th century. The book delves into the complex religious beliefs, folklore, and intricate social structures that define the identity of the inhabitants of the region. It explores their unique pastoral lifestyle, judicial systems, and the historical influences that shaped their presence in West Africa. By documenting traditional ceremonies, marriage customs, and tribal governance, the author captures a vivid snapshot of a society maintaining its traditional roots amidst a period of regional transition. As a significant contribution to African studies and anthropology, 'The Red Men of Nigeria' remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of West African ethnic groups and the preservation of indigenous traditions. It offers a rare window into the heart of Northern Nigeria, emphasizing the enduring cultural legacy and the distinct characteristics of the peoples inhabiting the area. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Wie neu. 15 cm x 22 cm. Frontispiece, 318 pages. 22 illustrations, including frontispiece. Map for "The Red Men of Nigeria" at rear. Hardcover [publisher's original red cloth] with gilt lettering on spine. Blind tooling to front board edges. Maroon text-block trim. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Includes, for example, the following: Nigeria / From Lagos to Bornu / Keffi / A Hausa Emirate / The Fulani and Their Cattle / Marriage and Family Conventions / The Kwottos, Igaras & Jukuns / Totems and Wer-Wolves / Animal Propitiation / Witch-Doctors & Medicine-Men / Love-Potions, Charms and Black Magic / Headhunting, Human Sacrifice and War Shrines / Wedding Rites and Domestic Life / Death, Burial and Eschatological Beliefs / Mourning and Resurrection Ceremonies etc. Writing in the aftermath of the Great War and the descent into barbarism across much of the European continent that the war precipitated, Wilson-Haffenden is not given to taking an overly superior tone with regards to his observations: "The performance of elaborate propitiatory gestures and prayers by a headhunter or an animal hunter over a corpse of his victim.tends perhaps at first to strike a European as not only indicative of a childish and unintelligent mentality, but even as showing a depraved and blasphemous religious viewpoint. On closer examination, however, I suggest that the above practices merely go to show how essentially similar to our own the native mind is. For it is in fact an easy matter to demonstrate that, given the reproduction of primitive conditions, many of us would, and indeed did but recently, react in response to analogous stimuli in a very similar manner to the native at the present day." (p.171-72) Foreword by Bronislaw Malinowski, Professor of Anthropology in the University of London. Malinowski (1884-1942) was one of the most important anthropologists of the 20th century who is widely recognized as a founder of social anthropology. (Encyclopedia Britannica) The book is a record of personal experiences and observations in Nigeria, and in particular, it contains an instalment of the author's contribution to the work of the Anthropological Department in the that Crown Dependency.…
