Ausgewählt und übersetzt von Tomá-Karel Cerný. - Es wird hier erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die in der Kafka-Forschung vorherrschende Meinung zu widerlegen, nach der das Romanfragment 'Der Verschollene' (oder .Amerika) kaum etwas mit den realen Lebensumständen in den Vereinigten Staaten der Jahre 1912 bis 1914 zu tun habe. Anhand neuer, bisher in der Forschung noch nicht ausgewerteter Dokumente versucht der Verfasser zu zeigen, daß Kafka mit seinem Roman eine sozialistische Utopie entwerfen wollte, die sich an den Vereinigten Staaten als dem damals technisch fortschrittlichsten Staat orientieren sollte. Eine Schlüsselstellung nimmt dabei der Text des Sozialisten Dr. Soukup ein, der 1912 in einem öffentlichen Vortrag und in einem Buch über seine amerikanischen Reiseeindrücke berichtete. Im dokumentarischen Anhang des Buches findet sich neben einigen wichtigen Bilddokumenten auch eine auszugsweise Übertragung des Soukupschen Berichts, die von Tomas-Karel Cerny besorgt wurde. Alfred Wirkner, Jahrgang 1952, studierte von 1971 bis 1976 an der Universität Göttingen Anglistik, Germanistik und Theologie.
