"On Drops", in Nature, 28 June 1877, vol 16 no. 400 pp 157-176, with the Worthington on pp 165-6 (with nine small inset illustrations). ("Worthington is best known for his work on fluid mechanics, especially the physics of splashes; for observing those, he pioneered techniques of high speed photography."--Wikipedia) This is the complete weekly issue, extracted from a larger bound volumethis is a crisp, tidy copy. Offered with the original wrappers (though detached).VG |\| These images are perhaps one of the first revelations on the quiet residence of energy in something as simple as a drop of water or mercury. Much in the same way Robert Hooke revealed the microscopic universe to unsuspecting readers, so too did Worthington, in his way, reveal the explosive world of small, fast, and lost events. Worthington's style is of course exceptionally restrained and free of exclamation, even while describing the first time any human has witnessed these events, like so: "watching the changes of form of drops of various liquids falling vertically on a horizontal planethe whole splash takes place so quickly that the eye cannot follow the changes of form" This report, "On Drops" follows Worthington's own earlier effort of 1876 and 1877 "A Second Paper on The Forms Assumed by Drops of Liquids falling vertically on a Horizontal Plate" (Proceedings of the Royal Society, 174 and 177), chronicles his brilliant adventure in the newly discovered world of fast timea world he was pretty much creating as he moved along.|\| Another version of this paper appears a little later in Scientific American Supplement from August 25, 1877. Other papers along this line by Worthington include: 'On the Forms assumed by Drops of Liquid falling Vertically on a Horizontal Plate' (Proc Roy Soc, 1876-1877); 'On the Spontaneous Segmentation of a Liquid Annulus' (ibid, 1879); 'On Pendent Drops' (ibid, 1881); 'On Impact with a Liquid Surface' (ibid, 1882); 'On the Horizontal Motion of Floating Bodies under the Action of Capillary Forces' (Phil Mag, 1883); On the Surface Forces in Fluids' (ibid, 1884); 'On the Error involved in Prof Quincke's Method of Calculating Surface Tensions from the Dimensions of Flat Drops and Bubbles' (ibid, 1885). |\| As a last note, there's also these two books by our author: A. M. Worthington (1895), The Splash of a Drop, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; and (1908), A Study of Splashes, published by Longmans, Green, and Co. It is particularly powerful to note that the illustrations here are drawings of the phenomena of his study of splashesdrawings, not photographs. The photos by Worthington (On A Splash from a Drop of Milk) would not appear until 1894. (An entire book is dedicated to this subject by Worthington, who published, in 1904, the wonderful A study of Splashes.) .
