Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Situated at the beginning, or the end, of the famous trade routes known as the Silk Road, China's ancient capital - Chang'an - flourished during the Tang dynasty (618- 907) to become the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the world. Tang: Treasures from the Silk Road capital presents wonderous and diverse artefacts from Chang'an and the surrounding area from temples and the tombs of the wealthy and the elite. Existing for over 300 years, the Tang dynasty is considered the golden age of the arts, science and commerce in China. Predating the travels of Marco Polo, people came from far and wide to China where foreign goods and ideas were welcomed, where women had greater opportunities to move freely, become educated and even take power. China's only female emperor, Wu Zetian, ruled during this time. It was also a time of rebellion, war and court intrigue. The influence of Tang remains strong today and is still evident in the city of X'ian (present-day Chang'an). The spectacular archaeological findings, drawn from ten museums in Shaanxi province, include gold, silver, glass, ceramics, sculptures and mural paintings demonstrate the high artistic achievements of this Golden Age of China. With few publications available in English on the art of the Tang dynasty, this will be a welcome book for general and specialist readers alike. Situated at the beginning, or the end, of the famous trade routes known as the Silk Road, China's ancient capital - Chang'an - flourished during the Tang dynasty (618- 907). This book presents diverse artefacts from Chang'an and the surrounding area from temples and the tombs of the wealthy and the elite. Published by Art Gallery New South Wales in 2015, this compelling paperback volume delves into the fascinating history and cultural significance of the Sarcophagus of Yu Hong. Discovered by farmers in 1999 in Wangguo, a village in central China's Shanxi province, this magnificent 6th-century marble sarcophagus reveals both the story of a man and his times as well as life along the Silk Road. The sarcophagus is that of Yu Hong (c533-92) who, at the age of 13, was sent as an envoy by the king of Rouran to Persia and Tuyuhun (modern-day Qinghai and Gansu provinces in northwest China). Between 550 and 554 he served as an ambassador to the Northern Qi dynasty and continued to work as an official in China during the Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties. This new English-language edition examines how the tomb of Yu Hong offers a fresh interpretation of the cultural interaction that occurred between China and the West due to the travel and trade along the Silk Road. Richly illustrated with numerous photographs of the sarcophagus and related archaeological artifacts, this book provides an insightful analysis of ancient Chinese and Central Asian funerary art and cultural exchange. Condition: Good paperback, a clean and solid copy with minimal wear.
