[nice clean copy with just a touch of wear at the spine ends; the jacket shows a bit of wear at the edges and corners, but is still bright and attractive]. One of the best, most perceptive "child of Hollywood" memoirs ever written: "What is it like to be a Hollywood princess, to grow up in a mansion, the daughter of the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, surrounded by the stars and celebrities other little girls dream about?" The author was the daughter of Dore Schary, who began as a playwright and screenwriter, later became a producer, then (briefly) was head of production at RKO and (not quite so briefly) at MGM -- before getting fired in 1957, whereupon he came full circle by writing and producing the Broadway hit "Sunrise at Campobello." Ms. Zimmer, whose first book this was, went on to a notable career as a notable career as a memoirist, novelist and teacher, writing primarily under a later married name, Jill Robinson.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. What is it like to be a Hollywood princess, to grow up in a mansion, the daughter of the head of MetroGoldwyn-Mayer Studios, surrounded by the stars and celebrities other little girls dream about? Jill Schary Zimmer's schoolmates included Gary Cooper's daughter, Maria, Laurence Olivier s son, Tarquin, Dickey Zanuck, Joan Benny, Jane Fonda, and David Selznick. She played with Leland Hayward and Margaret Sullavan's children, stayed overnight at Loretta Young's house, and performed (badly) for Gary Grant and Walter Huston. What's it like to be sent flowers by Clark Gable, meet Marion Brando when he's working for your father, date Walter Winchell, Jr. and Frank Sinatra (and be told the same evening to go home by Humphrey Bogart because you're the only virgin in the room)? She'd answer the door and there'd be Howard Hughes. Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly, and Van Johnson were Saturday Night Playmates for the family. Kitty Carlisle, Moss Hart, Sam Levene, and Danny Kaye were close family friends. On vacation, she was rescued from the Pacific Ocean by neighbor Robert Ryan. Young Senator Kennedy watched movies in her private projection room. When she really got interested in politics, it was on the arm of Adlai Stevenson. She thought all children went to school by limousine. And she felt very wicked indeed when her grandmother sneaked her aboard a trolley car, her first ride on public transportation! How did she survive it all? Brilliantly, but not unscathed; like all children, she wanted the comfort of being like everyone else. She isn't, for Jill, even as a young child had remarkable insight into what was going on around her: her perception of Hollywood life and the people around her is astonishing for someone so young. In her warmth and understanding, in her often hilariously wicked rendering of the fake and the fraudulent, she comes out as the kind of person you'd love to have as a friend and not dare have as an enemy. More than eight million readers glimpsed Jill Schary Zimmer's amazing childhood in McCalVs. Now they, the stars, their children, moviegoers, Jews, the President, in fact anyone who's ever been a child in America can read about themselves. There is slight wear and a minor tear in the dust jacket.
