He argues that it makes sense to talk about a "global turn" in international studies, a change which might be as profound and consequential as the well-known "linguistic turn" in the study of society and politics. This does not mean that globalisation, spearheaded by the USA, is ousting the nation-state from the global scene. In fact, the global order needs nation-states, although their position will be radically different and their sovereignty -- except for a few cases -- without much substance. Populist and romantic nationalism notwithstanding, there is no going back to an earlier and more virginal state of national political or cultural history. In this sense globalisation is not irreversible. Whether we like it or not, the global turn is here for good.

Yet education, infrastructure, and leisure facilities are also basic features in the distribution of universal welfare services for citizens' entire lives. The results, ideally, are green and spacious welfare cities. This book outlines the origins, development, challenges, and lived realities of the changing welfare city, focusing primarily on Denmark. Strategies have changed over the decades as models of development have shifted and as the needs of society and a warming planet have come into focus. The current welfare city can be described as an urban landscape characterized by, on the one hand, a division of functions and, on the other, mutual competition. The role of the state has been minimized, turning municipalities into the new major agents in attracting taxpayers and providing goods-both by means of urban planning.

Rather, Scandinavia's peaceful process of democratization owed itself to the development of a penetrative bureaucracy in the early modern period and the activism of cooperative associations, first of farmers in the early nineteenth century and then of industrialized workers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thanks to the gradual, relatively consensual adoption of political reforms and social norms, the history of "Nordic democratic exceptionalism" today helps account for the ongoing stability of the Scandinavian countries.

The traditional chronology assumes a peak in production during the reign of Gallienus (AD 259-268) that fades away in the reign of Constantine.This chronology has some obvious flaws. The supposed peak under the reign of Gallienus, whe…n the empire was falling apart, can only be described as a mirage. Some very fine sarcophagi were indeed produced in this period, but the number is very limited.With the reign of Constantine (AD 306-337) came wealth, and the so-called 'villa boom' that also revived sculpture in the round. At that time, it is believed that production of pagan sarcophagi had ceased to be replaced by Christian sarcophagi. This raises a very simple question, however: how were pagans buried?No doubt production of pagan sarcophagi continued beyond the turn of the century and Symmachus, who died in AD 402, was buried in such a sarcophagus.
