After surpassing the twin stages of agriculture sector viz. food security based agriculture till the advent of Green Revolution and self sufficiency in food crops after the Green Revolution India's modern agriculture is at present specialized agriculture to some extend poised towards commercial entrepreneurial agriculture besides facing multiple concerns and challenges. This is necessary but not a sufficient condition in achieving rapid rural transformation in the country. It calls for an urgent need for new initiatives to revive and rejuvenate Indian agriculture from subsistence to commercial farming and also to transform the life of vulnerable section of the rural people from mere poverty to near prosperity through adoption of innovative thinking and yield augmented technologies with cost effective approach. The present book provides comprehensive study of agricultural strategies / technologies being adopted in India and abroad and their impact on rural economy including problems and prospects to evince rural transformation. Success stories have been incorporated which serve as an imperative for the planners and policy makers to make effective policies and programmes in future to bring out economic growth of the entire nation in general and rapid rural transformation in particular. 168 pp.

Response of plants to air pollution and Green House Gases. Subject index. The human activities are changing the concentration of naturally occurring Green House Gases in the environment. These gases are generally long enough lived in the atmosphere very widely dispersed in the environment and warm up climate globally. The increase in food production may also increase the Green House Gas Emission. Therefore before an alarming situation arise the techniques for the reduction in the emission of Green House Gases from agriculture sector without reducing its production potential should be developed. In this context the present book is an effort to understand the current status of Green House Gases in the atmosphere. This book primarily deals about Green House Gas Emission from agricultural sectors like horticulture vegetables forests fisheries livestock etc. with their biochemistry and microbiology in spite of their meteorological relationship. Subsequently it also deals with the appropriate methods to mitigate their ill effects. Further the analytical methods for collection and analysis of these gases has also been discussed. The chapters in this book have been contributed by eminent researchers and scientists engaged in basic and applied research of their specialized fields. Therefore importance of this book has been increased for the scientists researchers teachers extension workers students and farmers. 128 pp.

Government of India launched a watershed development programme during the year 1983 84 with an objective to develop natural resources viz. land water vegetation and productivity of crops in addition to improvement of standard of living of the people. Based on the experience gained during 1983 90 the Watershed Development Programme has been expanded further to cover larger areas. Government of India through its Ministries of Agriculture Rural Development forestry managed the Watershed Development Programme in India. Further it was allotted even to non governmental organizations under the policy of government and private partnership so as to execute the works more effectively. However NGOs concentrated on water resource development so as to improve the irrigated area for improving the livelihood security of rural people on watershed basis unlike government departments which concentrated on overall development of natural resources and agriculture production. There are number of books covering watershed development programmes written by many authors. Hence an attempt is made to cover all aspects of watershed so as to observe and judge the effectiveness and efficiency of the watersheds based on the development of natural resources agriculture and socio economic conditions. Thus many points are covered in this book. 200 pp.

India has tremendous potential for developing coastal aquaculture and is now the sixth largest producer of fish in the world. In land fish production it receives the second position after China. The coastal fishermen have been one of the most vulnerable group among the poor in India. Their social exclusiveness on account of geographical separation and cultural isolation contributes to accentuation of penury. The seasonal character of their vocation and its hazardous implications coupled with uncertainty of catches casts shadow on their limited livelihood opportunities compounding its cascading effect on their poverty profile. Low level of literacy cripples their bargaining capacity in the trader dominant market thus depriving them of their legitimate price compensation for the risky endeavors in the marine environment. Fisher women often occupy marginal roles and live and work on the periphery of the centres of economic social and political power they tend to be especially vulnerable. The basic goal for women in fisheries development is to make them equal partners and productive and self reliant participants in the process of improving their own and their families nutritional and living standards and to enable them to realize their full potential as human beings in their own right as members of their family and community. Fisher women must be given the opportunity to acquire appropriate knowledge develop adequate skills and use appropriate technologies enabling them to make the greatest possible economic and social contribution. Present book incorporates authentic studies on various aspects narrated above which will go a long way in sound empowerment of fisher women. 152 pp.

Even after more than fifty years of development planning Indian economy continues to be agriculture based. The dependence of people on agriculture did not decline in a scale comparable to the reduction in the contribution of agriculture to the National Gross Domestic Product. Despite the significant progress in the overall development of the economy the rural urban disparities continue to be glaring. Still A very large majority of rural population dependent on agriculture and agricultural development is synonymous to rural development. Establishing Krishi Vigyana Kendras (KVK) (Farm Science Centres) is one of the key institutional innovations that sought to facilitate agricultural and rural development. Making the knowledge and other enabling resources in a relevant and readily usable form available to the rural population is the key mandate of KVK. Since the operational domain of KVK is the district where it is located it is in a better position to appreciate the local conditions. There are 580 KVKs in India to look after the rural development in their respective jurisdiction of the districts of each KVK. The KVK at CRIDA has the responsibility of contributing to the agricultural and rural development in Rangareddy District of Andhra Pradesh and is carrying out the works in collaboration with other research organizations in Hyderabad and all line Departments of State Government. This publication is an endeavour to put together information on the relevant technologies that are helpful to farm and household development. 168 pp.

Although micronutrients are needed in much smaller quantities as compared to primary nutrients like N P K they are as important as major nutrients. In practice the micronutrients are not regularly applied to soil in the form of common fertilizers. Their removal from soil has been going on for centuries without any systematic replacement. Several areas of our soil are incapable of supplying plants with sufficient amount of trace elements. With the adoption of intensive cropping and cultivation of high yielding varieties it is quite possible that deficiencies of micronutrients may occur on a large scale in future. Then one sided development in fertilizing of soils with only main nutrients the gradual loss of micro nutrients through weathering and leaching the decreasing use of organic manures and increasing use of high analysis fertilizers (which are relatively pure and do not contain trace element impurities) is contributing towards accelerating exhaustion of available supply of trace elements. Therefore without the use of trace elements it would not be possible to get the maximum benefit from applied NPK fertilizers and cultivation of high yielding varieties. Studies on micronutrients were started in India about six decades back yet detailed scientific investigations were taken upon in the last three decades. Nevertheless considerable information is available on different aspects especially role functions distribution in soils and plants deficiency and toxicity of trace element and use of trace element fertilizers but the information is scattered in different publications. This edited volume will enthuse a lot of interest in young scientist for studying various aspects of trace elements in considering this publication most timely when several million hectares of land in the world are afflicted with trace element deficiency and require optimum utilization to fulfill the food needs of the millions of people. 288 pp.

The future of our agriculture and food security will depend upon the attention we pay to soil conservation and enhancement of water harvesting and its careful and efficient use, conservation of agro-biodiversity, and anticipatory action for meeting the challenges of global warming resulting in unfavourable shift in temperature, rainfall and sea level rise etc. Indian farming systems has now achieved so many bright milestones producing over 100 million tonnes of rice and 90 millions tonnes of wheat during 2011-12. Our milk production has reached about 120 million tonnes. The milk revolution also owned much to the integrated attention paid to milk handling, processing distribution and pricing.
