Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Art Exhibition catalog - Northwest Indian Art. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. The title of this book comes from a suggestion made by Chief Tony Hunt and refers to a T-shaped piece of copper which was highly prized and traditionally served as a symbol of wealth and status among tribal nations along the western coasts of British Columbia, Washington State and Alaska. Wealth and its display, however, although highly prized, was not the chief objective. The true value and status was gained by giving it away. And in ceremonial transfers of wealth during such occasions as marriage, gifts of copper figured prominently. A tradition widely followed among the native peoples in retaliation for insult or injury was to break off a piece of the copper and give that piece to the offending party. This piece of "broken" copper retained all the mythic value of the original copper sheet. Presentation of such a piece of copper placed an onus upon the recipient to match or better the gesture. A copper sheet could in time be almost entirely cut away, but the rib was never "broken." For the rib served as the structure upon which returned pieces might later be reassembled. And it was the central rib which was the "Life of the Copper.".
