Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A unique narrative that combines historical analysis and reflection on heritage. History of the Jews and the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba brings the reader closer to the inhabited spaces, from the hypothetical Al-Andalus Jewish quarter to other places where those Cordoban Jews once lived. Following the Christian conquest of 1236, a new and repopulated Jewish quarter emerged, whose community revolved around the synagogue, and which would endure the dramatic events of the 1391 pogrom and the 1474 anti-convert riot, before their expulsion from the city in 1483. Focusing on the splendor of Córdoba, capital of al-Andalus and the 'House of Sciences,' it also explores the figures who, like Maimonides, contributed to the Hispanic-Jewish Golden Age--a cultural hub whose influence would be carried forward in the poetic and scientific vitality of Lucena. But this work also invites us to understand the Jewish quarter and the synagogue of Córdoba--one of the three existing on the Peninsula and among the first monuments protected by law--where layers of coexistence, conflict, and memory overlap, and whose history, far from being local, is the history of Spain, the Mediterranean, and Europe.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - There are trendy professions. Yuppies in the '80s, bloggers at the turn of the century, or influencers in the past decade. Now everyone wants to be a CEO, without really knowing what it entails. So that no one is misled, this book explains that the CEO is the person most committed to the company; the one who must achieve sales targets, customer satisfaction, cost savings, and financing. They must be accountable to the owners, convince customers and suppliers, employees and investors, unions, politicians, and anyone who voices an opinion on social media. They must also work from dawn to dusk; be the foremost expert in their industry; be friendly and assertive; uphold honesty as a guiding principle and possess above-average intelligence, in addition to understanding geopolitics and mastering the markets. And yet, a single misfortune can leave them without a company and without a job. The key to successfully tackling this colossal challenge is bold leadership. Bold because there are two options: hide or stand your ground. Bold because daring is behind great business achievements. Bold so as not to skimp on either effort or humility, without losing rationality or the desire to communicate. Bold because putting your neck on the line will be the only way to be a CEO.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A skeleton hidden for centuries in the deepest recesses of Málaga Cathedral. Impossible blueprints. And a story that should never have come to light. When journalist Adrián Escalada uncovers the find, he realizes that this is not merely an archaeological discovery, but the beginning of an investigation that will drag him back to the 18th century, into a web of power, ambition, and obsession surrounding a man willing to do anything to finish a cathedral that the world had decided to leave unfinished. José García de Abriles, architect, prisoner, visionary. and, to many, a madman. His story is intertwined with uprisings, political decisions, and secrets that changed the fate of Málaga, while one question echoes through time: what drove a man to lock himself away among the stones of a temple to complete his work. or die trying Amid hidden documents, conspiracies, and an uncomfortable truth, \*The Madman of the Cathedral\* is a novel that blends history and suspense with a narrative drive that grips the reader from the first page to the last secret.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Is it possible to speak of God, spirituality, and existential doubts while maintaining rigor and a healthy dose of irony This book proves that it is. Jesus, What a Life I Lead is an uplifting spiritual biography: a journey in search of the meaning of life, a tour through some of the events in the life of Jesus, in which the author bares his soul to tell us of his transition from the most steadfast faith to that slippery territory where skepticism coexists with the need to corner that lifeless void we call the soul. In this book there are sacraments, serial sins, earthly pleasures, questions that sting, and answers that only you know. There is laughter and moments when you find yourself thinking, 'Hey, maybe this guy is more logical than a saint.' Or more bluntly: 'This joker is speaking straight to my heart.' These pages are for believers and atheists, for agnostics and for anyone who feels they are receiving an undefined external force and needs to embrace it. A book for anyone who, gazing at a starry sky, has wondered what role they play here. With a sharp, mischievous, and surprisingly lucid style, the author turns the spiritual quest into a walk across elevated bridges and chasms that lead deep into oneself. Welcome to all who need to question themselves, delve into their spiritual side, and not lose their smile.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - One phone call is enough to shatter decades of apparent certainties: 'I'm not sure it was worth it.' With that sentence begins this unclassifiable book, the lucid memoir of a man who staked everything on a utopia. A correspondent, photographer, university professor, and activist for a cause that earned him exile, the Spanish-Argentine Víctor Steinberg--an exceptional witness to an irreplaceable era--unflinchingly reconstructs his odyssey across half the world and offers us a privileged account of it. Famine and pogroms in the USSR drove his grandparents to a Buenos Aires of uncertain promise: in that Jewish home, the Spanish Civil War and the legacy of Nazism heightened his parents' awareness and shaped his upbringing. That young communist shared an editorial office with Rodolfo Walsh, confronted Videla, and saw Troxler and other Montonero comrades die; he witnessed in Madrid the return of the Pasionaria to the Cortes and followed the execution of Puig Antich; he accompanied Palestinian exiles in Athens; he captured with his camera the struggle in Chile against Pinochet. But tomorrow never came, and the great revolutionary dream brought about the end of innocence. Here he confesses it.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Two worlds, two names, two religions At the end of the 16th century, in a world fractured by faith and steel, a man walked the border between two irreconcilable universes. Muley Xeque, a Moroccan prince and heir to a contested throne, is driven into exile by the bloody dynastic struggles of the Maghreb in a desperate flight that will take him to the heart of the Spanish Empire. Under the sun of Andújar and before the gaze of the Virgin of La Cabeza, Muley's fate took an irreversible turn. Convinced he had received a Marian sign, the prince renounced Islam to embrace the cross. This act, turned into a masterful political chess move by Philip II, culminated in a state baptism at El Escorial. Sponsored by the monarch himself, the prince was reborn as Don Felipe of Austria, the Black Prince. Through this fictionalized biography, we traverse the halls of the court and the Italian exile of a man with a tormented spirit whose life intersected with giants such as Lope de Vega, Cervantes, and Pope Paul V. In a Spain that decreed the expulsion of the Moriscos and viewed converts with suspicion, Don Felipe fought to maintain his dignity in the face of the Inquisition's watchful eye. This is the portrait of a man who lost everything only to find himself in a foreign land; a story of identity, power, and faith in an era when being different was the greatest of dangers.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Gálib Ibn Abd al-Rahman, The Most Powerful General of al-Andalus. This fast-paced historical novel rescues from the shadows of history the compelling figure of one of the most important figures of 10th-century al-Andalus: the Slavic slave Gálib, who would be freed by 'Abd al-Rahman III, and whose loyalty and faithful service to the Umayyad caliphs of Córdoba would lead him to become the general of all their armies. In an al-Andalus at the zenith of its military supremacy on the Peninsula, Gálib would be able to lead the war for control of the Maghreb and simultaneously defend the border with the Christian kingdoms with unwavering resolve, for which he would be recognized with the honorary title of 'the bearer of the two swords.' Only one man might perhaps challenge his power: the ambitious al-Mansur, who was destined, though he did not yet know it, to change the history of the West. The Lord of the Wind transports us to Caliphate Al-Andalus, amid feats of valor and intrigue, and allows us to rub shoulders with the viziers and nobles of the Cordoban court, but it also delves into the female sphere -- silenced by chroniclers -- from which wives, concubines, and mothers of heirs played an active role in the history of Al-Andalus. The author of the bestseller \*The Solitudes of the Inca\* immerses us in one of the most exciting and brilliant periods of our history in a novel that is destined to become a landmark in its genre.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - There is no greater risk than loving., nor greater deception than believing we know how to do it. Escala menor presents a polyphony of voices conversing or monologuing about desire, fidelity, loneliness, and the need--as human as it is contradictory--to be recognized by others. Between biology and romanticism, this novel explores the nature of the bond of love. Is love a cultural construct, an evolutionary strategy, or a necessary, alluring fiction Is sex the funeral of desire How long does eternal love last Why is love forever often fleeting These pages paint a bittersweet portrait of romantic relationships, with a structure that contrasts the female and male perspectives. Here there are no heroes or villains, only vulnerable human beings confronting their own limitations: the routine that extinguishes passion, desire that does not always align, the temptation to flee, loneliness even when accompanied, or the difficulty of choosing when every choice involves sacrifice. This story captivates with its honesty and the precision with which it portrays what we often keep silent, as well as the complex emotions that surface in a couple's intimacy and their surroundings. A sensitive, ensemble-style story that challenges the reader with an awkward yet universal question: if love is, like music, a matter of harmony, what happens when we only know how to play in a minor key.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Did you know that bullfighters went on strike so they could fight on Sundays That the Osborne bull was defended as cultural heritage before the Supreme Court That bullfighting even made its way into international campaigns for well-known brands like Coca-Cola, Adidas, and Johnnie Walker That there was even a bullfighting pool That the Fiesta has been present in such unexpected places as the Vatican, New York, or Japan That there were attempts to ban bullfights for religious, political, or moral reasons long before the current debates Or that the final afternoon of the great caliphs of bullfighting was shrouded in a strange curse The history of bullfighting is full of surprising episodes and unusual characters who rarely appear in books. Beyond the great figures and memorable performances, there is a whole world of little-known stories that form an essential part of bullfighting culture and the very history of Spain and Latin America. With rigor, passion, and a deep knowledge of the bullfighting world, Francisco Gordón Suárez brings together real, documented, and often forgotten stories that show the extent to which bullfighting has influenced politics, law, society, literature, advertising, and everyday life. An invitation to discover the lesser-known side of a unique tradition, whose legacy is an inseparable part of our cultural history. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Somewhere between Rhodes and Barcelona, between a line drawn on a tablet in the fourth century B.C. and a basilica that has remained unfinished for 140 years, there is room for almost everything that human beings have tried to say without words. Carlos Cubeiro has gathered twenty such moments: the duel of brushes between Apelles and Protogenes, the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel painted with a broken neck, Rembrandt's last self-portrait, the theft of the Mona Lisa, Duchamp's Fountain, the terracotta warriors of Xi'an rescued from oblivion, the birth of Mickey Mouse, the Moka coffee pot, the exodus from the Prado Museum during the Civil War, and the Sagrada Familia finally reaching its full height. Moments that, together, sketch something akin to a portrait of humanity and that contain something of its vanity, its genius, its greed, its capacity to destroy what it does not understand or to venerate what it does not deserve. A delightful, erudite, ironic, rigorous, and literary book, ready to point out that today we visit museums with the reverence we once reserved for temples, while art disappears from classrooms as if it were dispensable. Reading it is an act of resistance.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In 16th-century Spain, where faith coexists with intrigue and power imposes its rules, Friar Juan de la Cruz is arrested and thrown into a merciless captivity. His crime: defending a spiritual reform that challenges privileges and shakes the foundations of his own order. Dragged from one place to another, subjected to punishments and humiliations, the friar faces an extreme ordeal in which the body breaks, but the spirit grows stronger. In the confines of his cell, in the cold of endless nights, he begins an inner journey that will forever transform his understanding of pain, faith, and freedom. Meanwhile, in the halls of the court, nobles, advisors, and influential figures weave a web of interests where religion, politics, and ambition are dangerously intertwined. Teresa of Ávila, steadfast and visionary, faces silence, threats, and hidden maneuvers to save her most faithful collaborator, aware that the conflict transcends the personal and puts the course of an entire spiritual reform at stake. Baltasar Magro reconstructs, with narrative flair and historical rigor, a key episode in our history, where moral greatness confronts human misery. An intense novel about resistance, sacrifice, and dignity when all seems lost.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Much more than the nun of the stigmata: a woman of faith confronting power and suspicion. Was she a figure favored by her proximity to the court, or a nun who was out of step with her time An influential woman, or a mystic questioned for remaining true to her conscience Sister Patrocinio--María Josefa de los Dolores Quiroga Capopardo--embodies like few others the tensions of a turbulent Spain, torn by political changes, ideological struggles, and deep social divisions. Born in 1811, her life was marked by extraordinary phenomena that aroused both devotion and rejection. Known as the 'nun of the stigmata,' her name spread amid popular fervor and public suspicion. Yet beyond the legend, she was a Conceptionist nun, a founder of convents, and a champion of education for underprivileged girls, as well as a spiritual advisor to Isabel II during some of the most complex moments of her reign. That proximity to power placed her at the center of controversy: exiles, legal proceedings, and smear campaigns accompanied her career. In these pages, Cristina Ruiz-Alberdi reconstructs with historical rigor and narrative flair the life of a woman who lived between the cloister and the court, between mystical experience and the pressures of the world. Far from simplifications, this biography invites us to look anew, to understand rather than judge, and to discover the human dimension of a figure who continues to challenge the present. A faith that endured when everything urged her to give in.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Until Death Do Us Part is the story of a crime committed decades ago and a marriage forever marked by what they chose to hide. Wendy and Thom met at a writing workshop. They were young and trapped in lives they didn't want. Amid the confidences they shared and the desires they whispered, they imagined the possibility of committing the perfect crime. And what began as a literary game ended up being a real crime. Thirty years later, Thom -- a lackluster professor and writer suffering from writer's block -- returns to that past and begins to transform it into a story. What he writes threatens to shatter the fragile balance of their marriage and raise questions no one should ask. However, as he progresses with the draft, someone else begins to get closer to the truth. While Thom writes, Wendy lives with the feeling that the stability they have built could crumble at any moment. What is a creative exercise for him is, for her, the crack through which everything they have kept silent for decades could seep out. Although the past may seem distant, secrets have their own way of coming to light. A single word, a glance, or a poorly told story is enough to set them stirring. There are crimes that do not die in the past; they merely learn to wait.…

Did you know that Maradona practiced the goal he scored against England in Mexico '86 at Wembley beforehand Or that the first match in World Cup history was watched by just 300 people Did you know that one of the most famous referees in this tournament demanded a boat in case he had to flee the country after officiating a final Can you imagine a goalkeeper giving up playing in the World Cup quarterfinals to commentate on a match on the radio Or that Di Stéfano, one of soccer's greatest legends, never played a single match in a World Cup Have you ever wondered what role politics played in Argentina's 1978 victory Or what drove the Jackal to attempt to kidnap the star of the Israeli national team at Mexico '70 shortly after Honduras and El Salvador declared war on each other following a qualifying match for that same World Cup World Cups aren't just played on the field. They are also played out in boardrooms, in politics, in the press, on the streets, and in the collective memory. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In a world saturated with polished rhetoric, empty narratives, and political marketing, some leaders break the rules of the game and achieve something baffling: they win when no one expects it and hold on when they're written off. What do figures as diverse as Donald Trump, Pedro Sánchez, Javier Milei, José Mujica, and Andrés López Obrador have in common Inspired by Brutalist architecture, this book reveals a way of doing politics based on five pillars: authenticity, pragmatism, resilience, simplicity, and connection with the community. But it doesn't stop at the metaphor. Throughout its pages, you'll discover how psychopolitical techniques work, how to segment the electorate, how to capture the attention of an audience saturated with stimuli, and how to plant ideas in voters' minds without imposing them. Real-life examples, surprising stories, and practical tools to show that persuasion is about sowing ideas. An uncomfortable, provocative, and deeply practical book for those who want to understand--or conquer--political power in the 21st century.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - For more than a century, two powers vied for control of the Mediterranean. Rome and Carthage. Empire and survival. Ambition and resistance. Between 264 and 146 B.C., the ancient world witnessed a total war that pitted not only armies against each other, but entire models of civilization. From the waters of Sicily to the eternal snows of the Alps; from the mines of Hispania to the burning walls of Carthage, the war knew no truce. Hannibal Barca crossed impossible mountains with war elephants. Rome was humiliated at Cannae. Scipio took the fight to Africa. And, in the end, a city was wiped from the face of the earth. But who really started the conflict Was Carthage the aggressor. or Rome the instigator of a war sought for decades Was Hannibal a visionary genius or the last defender of a doomed civilization And what price did the ancient world pay for the ambition of universal domination This book offers a compelling reexamination of the so-called Punic Wars--the true Hundred Years' War of antiquity--debunking inherited myths and giving a voice back to the vanquished. Because history is written by the victors. but the truth is often hidden among the ruins.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Domingo Badía y Leblich was a Spanish Enlightenment figure, scholar, scientist, draftsman, adventurer, and spy born in Barcelona in 1767. His incredible life and extensive travels are still remembered, especially his stay in Morocco, when he was sent on a secret mission by Minister Manuel Godoy, disguised as an Abbasid prince and taking the name Ali Bey. After being expelled from that country, he traveled to Mecca, where he arrived on January 23, 1807. He was one of the first Europeans to do so and produced precise descriptions of Islam's holy city, risking his life in the process. Badía returned to Europe after six years of absence, and when he arrived in Paris, Napoleon ordered him to go to Madrid and place himself under the command of his brother Joseph I, the new King of Spain. Badía was appointed Intendant General for the province of Segovia and later Prefect of Córdoba, but following the definitive Spanish victory, Badía and his family went into exile in France as pro-French sympathizers. There he was granted a pension and devoted himself to writing the account of his journey. Later, the French government accepted his proposal to undertake a new pilgrimage to Mecca and from there join a caravan heading for Timbuktu. But everything went wrong. This biography, one of the few written about the figure, revives the memory of the charismatic and multifaceted Domingo Badía, alias Alí Bey, and reconstructs his life and extraordinary journeys. An experience that immerses the reader in the traveler's era through his original illustrations and portraits of the characters he would encounter on his adventures.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Did you know that in 1391, the largest collective blood transfusion ever recorded began in Spain, and its legacy endures to this day To what extent is it true that the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Jews in 1492 What was the social role of those 'New Christians' whom the Inquisition would persecute nearly a century later How does a respected rabbi come to be appointed bishop and even advisor to kings and popes Salomón Leví traded his kippah for the tonsure and took the name Pablo de Santa María: in addition to serving as a prelate in his native Burgos, he would go on to become a leading figure at the court of Castile, as well as an advisor to Benedict XIII during the Avignon Papacy. His is just one of many stories featuring the so-called conversos, but by following in his footsteps through the places he and thousands of others walked, David Jiménez-Blanco has uniquely reconstructed the settings of the Jewish presence in old Sepharad in search of the origins of many Spaniards. Accompanying him on the journey is his good friend Samuel Bengio, a son of the diaspora. Moving away from conventional historiography, a 21st-century Christian and a Jew have produced a fascinating study that becomes an insightful reflection on their collective identity. Who were Ferrán Martínez, Vicente Ferrer, and Jerónimo de Santa Fe Do the pogroms and the cultural integration of Jewish converts not find their echoes in the political rise of the Spanish Empire How does this fusion shed light on the mysticism of Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross or the literature of the Golden Age What do the latest DNA analyses reveal about a Jewish heritage This work is an eloquent account of the quest for one's roots amid the mists of an uncomfortable and ever-complex past.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Nothing Ended in 1975 For a long time, the idea prevailed that the Spanish far right disappeared after Franco's death. History shows that this was not the case. The ideas, groups, and networks that occupied that political space did not die out: they changed form, reorganized, and remained active in public life. This book reconstructs that trajectory across half a century of political history. The journey begins in the final years of the dictatorship and in the so-called Francoist bunker, where the first attempts to preserve the regime's authoritarian legacy were hatched. It continues with the political violence that marked the Transition and with the emergence of neo-fascist organizations that operated both within and outside institutions. The research then traces the extra-parliamentary groups that survived in the decades that followed, as well as the ultra-Catholic networks that influenced social debate and the identity movements that gradually occupied new political and cultural spaces. This process ultimately culminates in the emergence of new political forces in the 21st century, including Vox. Drawing on extensive documentation from archives, the press, and specialized studies, the author offers a clear and rigorous account of the evolution of this phenomenon. Throughout its pages, the book profiles the key figures, organizations, and events that have shaped its development in democratic Spain. The past seems not to have ended, for the present speaks volumes.…
