It provided education, opportunities to practise public speaking and opened the eyes of countrywomen to the wider world around them. The first organisers were ex-suffragists who felt that now they had the vote women needed an education to give them the confidence to make their presence felt in this new world opening up to them. Responding to the national crisis at the outbreak of the Second World War, the Womens Institute again proved its worth by tackling food shortages and organising schemes such as finding billets for evacuee children. A further challenge in the 1960s and 1970s was the rise of the feminist movement. Membership of the WI started to decline and the executive searched for ways to improve its image and keep it relevant to younger women. Then, out of the blue, came the Calendar Girls. Any idea that the WI consisted only of jam and Jerusalem was swept away by the energy, imagination and sheer courage of the women of Rylstone WI and led not only to a renewed interest in and respect for the countrywomen of Great Britain but to a flourishing of new branches in both town and country. After the ravages of war, the International Festival and Military Tattoo was introduced as an antidote to post-war austerity, the new Civic Survey and Plan put forward grandiose recommendations for change, and a new young Queen visited the city. This was a time when slum housing was a blight on many people's lives, but there was a real sense of community that was ultimately lost in the move to sparkling, modern homes in the new housing estates. People continued to use the trams to travel to work in the many factories or make trips to Portobello for a day of fun, but they were slowly usurped by the car. It was a glory period for the local football teams, and nights spent dancing or at the pictures were a weekly event. There was still the horse-drawn milk float and children played in streets that were lit by gas. His dual allegiances incurred the wrath of the Gaelic Athletic Association hierarchy and he received a mandatory life ban when his dalliances with the 'other' game were discovered. As a teenager Norman was thrust into the limelight by virtue of a move to the most famous English club of the day, Arsenal, before spells at Swindon Town and Portsmouth. Full international honours soon followed, and Norman was capped eighteen times for Northern Ireland. What makes this book so compelling is how it captures the social context of the period of the 1930s through to the culmination of Norman's career, when Northern Ireland reached the World Cup finals at Sweden in 1958. All this against a backdrop of recurring injuries and a serious fall-out with Norman's club manager at Portsmouth, which provoked him to write an explosive article for the Daily Express, unheard of at a time before the maximum wage was abolished, when footballers were considered by many no more than slaves of their club. Norman was a character. Some of his escapades may seem far-fetched but are wholly true as he recalls the highlights of his life and career.
