The Charterhouse is a peaceful spot that has rightly been described as 'a place of leafy seclusion'. A Carthusian priory was founded here in 1371 and, after it had been dissolved by Henry VIII, one of his leading courtiers built a mansion on the site. Elizabeth I visited the house a number of times and her cousin the Duke of Norfolk was kept under house arrest here before his execution for treason in 1572. In 1611 it was bought by the immensely wealthy financier Thomas Sutton, who endowed an almshouse and school. The school was moved away in 1872, but the almshouse for elderly men who are in need of financial and social support remains. Known as the Brothers, recalling the monastic past, they are selected from a wide variety of backgrounds and include teachers, clergymen, writers and editors, musicians and artists, and many have served in the armed forces. The chapel, the great hall, great chamber and Norfolk Cloister are especially fine rooms in a building which is one of the best preserved, yet least known, historic sites in London. The Wehrmacht was hugely experienced, equipped with some of the best weaponry of the war and was holding its own in Italy and Russia at the time. Berlin knew the invasion was coming and had had years to prepare for it. So how did the Germans view the impending invasion and campaign, did they feel ready, what forces did they have and could they have done better? Previous histories have focused on the clash of the generals; the battle between von Runstedt and Eisenhower, Montgomery and Rommel, but on the German side in particular this was a battle that would be fought by divisional and regimental commanders; the German D-Day colonels upon whom the real business of trying to defeat the invasion fell it was they and their men, outnumbered and outgunned, who somehow held Normandy for ten whole weeks against the greatest seaborne invasion force ever assembled, and occasionally even came close to defeating it. This was certainly the case on the West Highland Coast. During the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth century shipping was the only way to transport goods and people in and out of the West Highlands and Islands. Served by paddle steamers, puffers and small coasters, the piers served a vital function for their communities. Often with stunning mountain backdrops, many settlements clustered around the piers. Some piers, like at Oban could accommodate a number of ships at once, while others, such as at Scarinish on the Island of Tiree, were built with functionality in mind, providing for the needs of the inhabitants.
