Although they were delivered more than seventy years ago, they are remarkably contemporary. Every word still resonates with passion and dedication to the human adventure. We must develop an art of education that can lead us out of the social chaos into which we have fallen during the last few years and decades. there is no escaping this chaos unless we can find a way to bring spirituality into human souls through education, so that human beings may find a way to progress and to further the evolution of civilization out of the spirit itself. When he gave these lectures, Rudolf Steiner had only eleven months left to live. The first Waldorf School had been founded five years before and the intervening period had seen Steiner active in every aspect of school life. Now, in a sense was time to bring the ripe fruit of this work before the public. Together with its companion course The Essentials of Education (given three days before), The Roots of Education provides a stimulating synthesis of the Waldorf approach. Teachers, parents and anyone interested in education will find here the fundamental characteristics of the process of a new art of educaton.

This is reflected in the so~called "mind~body split" in our modem times. These two "worlds" collide again and again in our daily experience. Increasing efforts are expended to order modern society "scientifically"; yet, as Nobel prizewinning author Saul Bellow states in his lucid foreword, "the scientific method . is powerless to explain the consciousness that directs it." For this crucial dilemma Rudolf Steiner suggests a solution beyond the "boundaries of natural science." Steiner argues for a twofold extension of consciousness. The first involves mental disciplines leading to a pure, sense~free thought activity. The second requires the mind to learn how to set aside thinking and give itself over to pure perception. Both exercises can lead to the development of higher cognitive faculties that enable us to grasp the vital connections between the inner and outer realms.

Rudolf Steiner saw it as his particular task to introduce detailed, scientific knowledge of reincarnation and karma into the West. He believed that a deepened understanding and experience of the reality of successive earth lives formed the basis for true spiritual knowledge of the relationship of human beings and the cosmos. Thus, in contrast to most teachings on this subject, he always gave concrete descriptions of the metamorphoses undergone by individuals in the course of successive incarnations. For this reason, too, he gave specific examples of the working of karma, as well as practical exercises for experiencing the reality of incarnation. In this set of lectures, which contains some of Steiner's most important teachings on the subject, Rudolf Steiner describes the development of "feeling memory" and gives many other exercises that lead to real knowledge of karma and reincarnation. Examples are also given of how karmic effects pass between incarnations, and the impact of the idea of reincarnation on our moral lives is clearly shown. RUDOLF STEINER (1861~1925) was the founder of Anthroposophy, a modern spiritual path or science. Out of his spiritual researches, he was able to provide indications for the renewal of many human activities, including education (Waldorf Schools), agriculture (Biodynamics), medicine (Anthroposophical Medicine), special education (the Camphill Movement), economics, philosophy, and religion. In 1924, he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world.

They deal in an immensely practical way with the teaching of writing and reading, geography, geometry, languages and much else. One is repeatedly shown how to embark on a new subject with the children by paying close attention to every detail at first, thus laying the foundation for a subsequent rapid widening of horizons which makes possible a considerable economy in the time needed to cover necessary ground. Education is seen not so much as a means of equipping youngsters to become wage earners but rather as a matter of helping them to know in all its marvellous diversity the world in which they have to live and find their way. A logical consequence this is that geography, knowledge of the world, is handled as the backdrop, the foundation for all other subjects.

At 9:00 a.rn. he gave the course now translated as Foundations of Human Experience; at 11 :00 a.m., Practical Advice to Teachers; and then, after lunch, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., he held the informal "discussions" published in this book. The tone is spontaneous and relaxed. Steiner does not prescribe specific methods but introduces topics and situations, giving guide lines and allocating practical assignments that are taken up and discussed in the next session. In this way, the discussions are filled with insights and indications in many different areas of teaching~history, geography, botany, zoology, form drawing, mathematics. Speech exercises are included. This edition also includes, for the first time in English, three very important lectures on the curriculum given on the day before the school opened. THESE FIFTEEN DISCUSSIONS constitute an essential part of the basic training material for Waldorf teachers.

In each section of Rhythms Of Learning, Roberto Trostli introduces the reader to Rudolf Steiner's lectures on specific aspects of the child's rhythm of development, and to the ways that Waldorf education responds to the child at each stage of growth. We are shown how Waldorf teachers must, through their own inner capacities and awareness, learn to recognize and meet each new stage of development in children as they unfold new capacities of body, soul, and spirit. Waldorf education is not based on pre~set methods and curricula, but depends on the creativity and spiritual development of the teachers themselves, who must respond spontaneously to each child and situation anew. When children relate what they learn to their own experiences, they are interested and alive, and what they learn becomes their own. Waldorf schools are designed to foster this kind of learning. Parents around the world can see in their children the results of an education that considers the whole child as body, soul, and spirit.

The son of a minor railway official, Steiner received a technical education in physics, chemistry, and mathematics and wrote his doctoral dissertation in philosophy. Selected to edit the scientific works of Goethe, one would have imagined him destined for an academic career. But Steiner was gifted with more than intelligence. From an early age, he knew himself possessed of clairvoyant capacities: he knew the spiritual worlds as intimately as the sensory one. A unique combination of circumstance and, later, an experience of the Christ~Event led him to assume the responsibility for leading humanity in full consciousness from scientific naturalism to what he came to call spiritual science. Initiated and encouraged in this task by incarnate and excarnate teachers, Steiner first worked within the Theosophical Society, which he left in 1913 to found the Anthroposophical Society. Under these auspices, he worked tirelessly to reunite the spiritual in the human being with the spiritual in the cosmos. Among the initiatives he founded are: Waldorf education; biodynamic agriculture; anthroposophical medicine; the movement for a threefold social order; the new art of eurythmy; the Anthroposophical Society; and even a sister movement for Christian renewal called the Christian Community. Stewart Eastons is the first full~scale biography of Rudolf Steiner written in English.
