Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'There is enough detail to give the reader a clear understanding of the war in the far west, which tends to be a forgotten subject.'--Civil War CourierDid you know that eleven days before Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was fired upon, the Civil War had already begun in Texas The Civil War in the West has not been the focus of much attention, but it was the location of fierce fighting and stormy conflicts. Not everyone wanted to secede from the Union, although between sixty and seventy thousand Texans volunteered to take up arms. Sam Houston, governor of the territory in 1861, opposed secession and was forced out after the legislature approved it. Texas troops proceeded to conquer the New Mexico Territory (all of the present-day states of New Mexico and Arizona) for the Confederacy. The war was all the more difficult in the West, because they had a unique problem: defending themselves from hostile Native Americans and Mexican bandits while also fighting the Federal forces. Many skirmishes were fought against those enemies. This exciting volume tells all about the war in Texas and New Mexico Territory: the intense combat, the brilliant strategies, and the heroic soldiers who fought for their homeland.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Williamsburg was one of the most important cities of eighteenth-century America. Capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, it was a political and economic center especially before and during the American Revolution. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., recognized its status in 1926 and led the way in restoring the town to its original splendor. Today, Colonial Williamsburg attracts millions of visitors each year to its authentically recreated eighteenth-century village. Full of historically significant, beautiful buildings, Williamsburg is a wonderful place to explore. Now you can walk the streets and view the town without even leaving your chair with The Majesty of Colonial Williamsburg . The main houses, public buildings, and taverns plus museums, crafts, and stores are represented here in more than two hundred full-color photographs. The homes are elegantly furnished in period style, which is shown here in rich detail. The book also showcases Carter s Grove, a plantation built in 1751 and located eight miles away, and two buildings from the College of William and Mary. In addition to documenting Williamsburg in pictures, the author recounts the town's history. The Majesty of Colonial Williamsburg is the eighth volume in Pelican s acclaimed Majesty architecture series. Anyone who has been to Williamsburg in person will treasure this photographic remembrance; anyone else will simply enjoy seeing this lovely, historically accurate village up close and learning more about colonial American life. Peter Beney has been a professional photographer for more than forty years. This is his third book in the Majesty series for Pelican; he has also written and photographed The Majesty of Savannah and The Majesty of Charleston.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Well-known for its hunting, fishing, and seafaring capabilities, the town of Barnegat, New Jersey, was also once a thriving center of industry and modern technology.Steam locomotives once raged through the pines, and over 4000 boats were built at the Perrine Boat Works. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Whether a local citizen, former resident, or visitor, Erie County will definitely entertain, and it will remind us of the perseverance and strength of small-town America.Erie County, Pennsylvania, is an interesting mixture of peaceful rural landscapes and vigorous industrial scenes. From Albion, Girard, and Fairview in the west, through Waterford and Edinboro, to Corry, Wattsburg, North East, Harborcreek, and Lawrence Park in the east, this volume touches upon many of the small towns, villages, and rural areas that make up this diverse county. The book's images, many never before published, have been selected by local historians and taken from local historical societies' archives to represent the social and cultural aspects of each community. From these pictures, mainly taken in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the distinct identity of each area comes alive with views of farmlands, businesses, schools, and recreation, yet despite thisindividuality, these unique communities do share much in common in tradition and personality.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This fascinating new book introduces us to the landed gentry of the Somerset Hills, with over 200 images bringing to life these colorful families and their magnificent estates. After the Civil War, a class of industrialists and financiers amassed great fortunes while building the infrastructure of an expanding nation. Much of this money and power was concentrated in New York City, which quickly became crowded and unsuitable for the building of large estates. Many wealthy businessmen began to look eagerly toward the pastoral beauty of New Jersey as a site for their luxurious homes. Modeling itself on the English aristocracy, this uniquely American plutocracy sought to establish country seats, requiring acreage on a grand scale but in close proximity to New York City. Men such as George Seney, president of the Metropolitan Bank of New York, began purchasing property in Somerset County in the early 1870s, and soon many others were purchasing land in the county from the local farmers. We meet the great families themselves, from the Seneys, Drydens, Stevenses, Pfizers, and Roeblings, to the Forbes, as well as such famous individuals as Jackie Kennedy and King Hassan II of Morocco. We are shown around the great estates, and see the stone masons, wood carvers, and other artisans and tradesmen who created them.…

Neuware - Captivating and entertaining, this new collection of rare images brings to life the past of the historic Lower Blackstone River Valley. With insightful captions and hundreds of breathtaking photographs, author Charles Edouard Savoie introduces us to many of the early residents who shaped the future of the five communities in this area. We are transported back in time to see early homes and places of work, play, worship, and education. Valley residents are profiled, including a descendant of the Indian warrior-king Philip-Metacomet, local military heroes, industrial movers and shakers, working-class people, farmers, and merchants. The people in the valley's communities are shown true to form--working, playing, and pulling together in times of crisis.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The history of a town is found in the faces of its people and the places familiar to them. It is the story of the families that lived, worked, and played together over the years. With Lewisboro, the reader is invited to take a fascinating step back in time to view the history of this Westchester County town as it unfolds. The town is divided into six hamlets that are each proud of their unique heritage: Vista, Lewisboro, South Salem, Waccabuc, Cross River, and Goldens Bridge. Primarily a rural farm community in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the introduction of the New York City Reservoir System and improved highways changed Lewisboro in many ways. Its lakes became lake communities offering affordable vacation homes; its farms became neighborhoods; and the railroad made commuting a way of life. Slowly the town grew.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Author Ruth Roerig has gathered fascinating images and written insightful text to be enjoyed by residents and tourists alike. The town of Malta, New York, lies in the near-center of Saratoga County with Saratoga Lake, Round Lake, and Little Round Lake bordering the community. While Malta has no rivers or mountains the land is gently rolling and several streams feed the lakes. Historically Malta was an agricultural community with small, independent farms that supplied food and shelter to support the families who lived on them. Three commodities raised as cash crops were potatoes, flax, and sheep. Two local granges and several churches met the social and religious needs of the area. Today most of the farms have disappeared and the construction of Interstate 87 made Malta ideal for residential communities and small business enterprises.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Join author John V. Quarstein as he recounts the history and stories of the Civil War on the Virginia Peninsula through vintage images. The Civil War on the Virginia Peninsula is the first comprehensive pictorial history interpreting the events that occurred on the Virginia Peninsula during the war that forever changed our nation. This volume offers over 200 fascinating images from museums, archives, and private collections throughout America; together they tell powerful stories of valor, leadership, technology, and strategy. Photographers and famous artists alike vividly portrayed soldiers, leaders, and innovations in a compelling manner that brings alive the glory and sadness of the American Civil War. This enthralling visual history chronicles the war's first year, during which the Virginia Peninsula was the focus of Union efforts to capture the Confederate capital 70 miles away at Richmond. Beginning with Union General Benjamin F. Butler's arrival at Fort Monroe in May 1861, until the time of Major General George B. McClellan's pivotal march on Richmond in the spring of 1862, the Virginia Peninsula was the scene of some of the Civil War's most critical events, including the contraband of war issue; the Battle of Big Bethel, the war's first land battle; the Monitor-Merrimac engagement, the first battle between ironclad ships; and the Peninsula Campaign.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Photographer Dan McNulty was a Jersey City resident who spent most of his time working in his family's funeral home. McNulty's photography was a mere sideline, but this fact did not affect the high artistic quality of the images of the city that he produced during the 1940s and '50s. During the two decades of McNulty's work, Jersey City experienced many changes. The powerful political machine of Mayor Frank Hague was brought down after thirty yearsin 1949 by the reform team of John V. Kenny, and this period also saw the end of the city's success in the railroad industry. In the 1950s, the first large housing projects were constructed in the city; other sweeping developments in this sphere would follow in the 1960s. McNulty documented these changes and others that resulted during this twenty year period through dramatic photographs of vacant railroad terminals, dynamic commercial and residential districts, successful factories and manufacturing plants, and significant WPA projects such as the Jersey City Medical Center and Roosevelt Stadium.…

    Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.
