Paperback. Condizione: New. This study focuses mainly on the archaeological aspects of monasteries in the northern Judaean Shephelah and the western Samaria Hills during the Byzantine period. Many Christian sites have been uncovered in these two regions in the past years during salvage excavations and routine monitoring and insp…ection activities conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Some of these have not been systematically investigated and are presented here for the first time. In addition, all the locations where Christian archaeological remains and finds have been brought to light in these two geographic regions during the study period are presented. An effort has been made to draw a distinction between the different sites in terms of their type and function in order to determine whether they were villages, farmsteads, estates, monasteries, or some other type of settlement. The book examines the monasteries, the date of their foundation, the reasons for their establishment, and their interactions with the settlements in their broader area, with holy sites, pilgrimage sites, and pilgrim routes. In addition, the study proposes criteria according to which the different types of monasteries can be classified.

It contains the transcription of thre…e texts concerning the sites (small ancient sanctuaries) on Kounados Hill on the Greek island of Paros (in the Cyclades), with the original photos.Otto Rubensohn (1867-1964) was a German archaeologist of Jewish origin. Although his involvement in the field of archaeology was relatively short and he spent most of his career teaching in elementary and secondary schools, he is now one of the respected German archaeologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily because of his excavations on the Greek island of Paros and in Egypt. Unfortunately, his importance for German and Greek Classical archaeology and Egyptology is still not fully understood and appreciated.As the sanctuaries on Kounados were rather preliminarily published by Rubensohn and haven't been excavated (or thoroughly investigated) in the last 120 years, the transcription and publication of the unpublished texts and images will add some new information on these sites as well as on the history of archaeology in Greece at the turn of the last centuries.The book is intended for archaeologists, dealing with Greek archaeology, and historians specializing in the history of archaeology (or the history of science and intellectual history in general).

From the Early through Late Bronze Age, the Indus (and more broadly South Asia) remained critical to western regions for valuable, indispensable commodities destined for elites from Mesopotamia and other regions to the west. The volume's case studies are complex and multifaceted, including but not limited to linguistics, iconography, paleobotany, archaeology, ancient disease and medicine, as well as scientific, materials, and technological analysis. As such, this collection of 11 papers constitutes the first of a series that seek to address a lingering lacuna in prehistoric studies: multi-disciplinary case-studies of Afro-Eurasian exchange.

Beyond the controversy, the crisis caused by the prince's royal anointing was a decisive episode in the historical development of the kingdom of Toledo, preparing the ground for the conversion of Reccared to Catholicism and accelerating the unification of Arians and Catholics, Goths and Romans. This study aims to provide a coherent response to the main questions raised by this important historical episode (the nature of the rebellion, the true motivations and reactions, personal responsibilities, political and religious consequences, etc.), as well as highlighting the importance of Hermenegild's conversion in relation to the subsequent sacralisation of the Visigothic royal institution.

It tells the story of a working-class boy, born into the travails of war-torn London, and his evacuation to South Wales to live with a mining c…ommunity. The return to London in time to celebrate VE-Day remains a vivid memory. After moving to Hemel Hempstead New Town he became fascinated with the museums at St Albans and spent many hours watching excavations on Roman Verulamium before being invited to help.Studying graphic design at Watford School of Art developed his talents, which he was able to combine with his activities on the excavations as he began to record the mosaic pavements then being exposed. Work as a graphic designer with the Gas Board was not compelling, and he was fortunate to secure employment as an archaeological illustrator with the government's Ancient Monuments Inspectorate, where he met a wide range of unusual personalities. Tea-breaks were an education, as were lectures he was invited to attend at the Society of Antiquaries of London. Soon Neal became the manager of the archaeological drawing office, responsible for a team of illustrators recording a wide range of artefacts from excavations sponsored by the department. His work became renowned in the profession and, increasingly, he was invited to help on excavations in England and abroad. At the age of 23 he directed his own excavations on the Roman villa in Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead, which led to the publication of a monograph. With his growing interest and expertise, he was frequently invited to record Roman mosaics, often at a moment's notice, and was able to share the excitement of discovery of many of them. After 15 years he became a full-time archaeologist and excavated a variety of sites of all periods culminating on the extensive excavations of a Roman settlement at Stanwick, Northamptonshire. Early retirement allowed the time to concentrate, with a colleague, on the publication of the corpus of Roman Mosaics of Britain and, later, to record the medieval mosaics at Westminster Abbey and Canterbury.

The archival research carried out by various specialists - and above all by Dr. Enrique Soria Mesa and his team - has been decisive in this… discovery. Indeed, over the last two decades, the existence of a system based on significant mobility has been established as a new historiographical paradigm. This newly discovered system, however, preserved the appearance of eternity and statism that the prevailing ideological order required to perpetuate itself.Nevertheless, not all this social progression was aimed directly towards the achievement of integration into the nobility. Quite often, under the veil of aristocratic or noble appearances, impressive artisanal and mercantile activities were developed over extensive periods. These activities were in fact closely related to the economic boost that for more than a century converted a large part of Spain - including Andalusia - into a first-rate economic power.This book aims to rescue the history of a powerful intermediate category - formerly referred to as the bourgeoisie - that the contributors have been detecting in their research in national and local archives for more than twenty years. Based on that evidence, they suggest using the term mesocracy, since all these groups occupied intermediate spaces of power while they slowly tried to move upwards in the social ladder, a movement developed by resorting to long-term family strategies that created dynasties of officials that ranged from middle municipal positions (jurados or jurors) to public notaries, also including merchants, artisans, doctors, and lawyers.In addition, in all these groups a very significant presence of Jewish converts - conversos - was noted, and it was these roles that the descendants of Jews found settled professional status, thus achieving not only socioeconomic success but also definitive assimilation, despite the repressive effects of the Inquisition and the racist blood purity statutes. Therefore, the overarching chronology, before and after the time under our scrutiny, suggests a fall in the 15th century from prominent power and status in many cities of Castile for the majority of Jews and conversos, followed by a slow recovery in the 16th and 17th centuries using a variety of means (such as minor institutional positions, like jurors in the city councils; professional associations - merchant guilds, for instance; or some noteworthy professions - doctors, notaries or prominent servants of the aristocracy), ending in a period of obscurity and oblivion in the 18th century. The book focuses on the Early Modern period, when for many conversos these mesocratic stages seem to have formed an acceptable, though discrete, solution. Nothing, however, should be taken for granted, and where possible the contributions survey the importance of the converso condition within the gr.

Paperback. Condizione: New. During the Roman period, inland regions are often assumed to have been difficult to access, with imports and trade dropping off as distance from the coast increased. Long-distance maritime trade has been the subject of intensive study, but the complex dynamics that governed inland trade have not seen…the same level of interest. Within this book, Northern Italy serves as a case study to explore the role transport cost and consumer choice played in the distribution of local and imported goods throughout inland regions. Using three contrasting, quantified datasets of amphorae, finewares, and marble (together forming the Material Data in Northern Italy (MADINI) dataset), chronological and spatial patterns in inland trade are analysed using aoristic analysis and hierarchical clustering. The results demonstrate that inland trade was far more complex than a simple regression of imports as distance from the coast increased. Clear zones of consumption across Northern Italy are seen in the distribution of the material data, often closely linked to transport costs. While the river network is shown to have been a crucial in facilitating inland transport, the significance of trans-mountain trade across the Alps and the Apennines has been underestimated. Areas furthest inland are often shown to have had the greatest diversity in the provenance and types of material, as opposed to coastal areas which demonstrate a more limited selection. The results highlight the diverse array of factors governing inland trade and the interplay between cost and choice in the decisions made by consumers.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Life and Death in Roman Carlisle makes an important contribution to the study of burials and identity in the region of Hadrian's Wall. The book presents the results of excavations beneath Cumbria House, a new municipal building on Botchergate in the city centre. In Roman times this was the location of… part of a roadside cremation cemetery associated with a fort established by the Roman army in AD 73. Those buried in this part of the cemetery died in the years just prior to and during the building of Hadrian's Wall, when Luguvalium was emerging as the most important Roman military base and largest urban centre in northwest Britain. As a result of this swift rise in profile, the early settlement-edge funerary enclosures quickly went out of use, being swallowed up and overbuilt by the expanding extramural settlement.Early Roman Carlisle would have boasted a vibrant multicultural population, and this is reflected in its burial evidence. Among the remains of some twenty cremation burials excavated at Cumbria House are the two most richly furnished examples from northern Britain. While the large assemblages of ceramic grave goods are unlike those of any other burials in the military north, close parallels are known from the France/Belgium border, in the former territory of the Nervii. The Nervians were described by Julius Caesar as having the fiercest fighters of all the Gallic tribes and this area was a major source of recruitment for the Roman army. Most of the pottery vessels placed in the graves were produced locally, probably at kilns within Roman Carlisle, and thus must have been made to order by those familiar with both the burial rites and the ceramic repertoire of the Nervian region.The presence of a community of Nervians living in Luguvalium in the early second century is a new discovery but fits well with previous arguments made about the possible replacement of the Ala Gallorum Sebosiana with another unit from Gallia Belgica when the fort at Luguvalium was completely rebuilt around AD 105. Meticulously referencing the relevant literature from Roman Britain and the Continent, the authors explore the significance of the new data for our understanding of the make-up of Roman Carlisle's population and the identity of its various garrisons.
