First edition. Octavo. 288 pp. plus a fold-out map of Yosemite at rear entitled "Yosemite and Big Trees Via "Madera" and the New Turnpike Stage Road." Publisher's gilt and blind ruled blue cloth with beveled edges, gilt cover and spine lettering, chocolate brown endpapers. A bit of extremity ear but a very handsome and clean cop…y.A fascinating and useful guide to the Bay Area in 1879. The front is something of a Blue Book, listing names and addresses of society people. There is then a long section of the various clubs of the area and their members such as the Union, Chit-Chat, Loring, Verein and Concordia Clubs. Likely the most famous of them was the Bohemian Club with its list of members listed over seven pages. Honorary members include Samuel Clemens, Joaquin Miller and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Toward the end are listed the theaters of the area, each with a short blurb and a full page seating chart. Also listed are military personnel in the area, attorneys and hotels. Numerous ads at the rear.The map shows Yosemite as it is entering it's real attraction as a tourist destination. "In March 1877, Henry Washburn bought out his partners' interests and in November incorporated the "Yosemite Stage & Turnpike Company" to carry passengers and freight from Merced to "Big Tree Station," the Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, Nevada Fall and the Mariposa Grove, as well as to points outside the park including Fresno Flats (Oakhurst), the Fresno Grove of Giant Sequoias, and Madera. The company also supplied conveyances and livery services for visitors to the Yosemite Grant and the big trees. Until the end of the year, the South Fork and Yosemite Turnpike Road was administered separately by Washburn, John B. Bruce and J. J. Cook, Washburn's new partners in the South Fork properties; however, in December 1877 the two concerns were consolidated. The stage road to Fresno Flats was completed in 1879, and the Madera road was opened in 1881 at a cost of $60,000.36 Madera was important to the [railroad] cartel, as the Southern Pacific Railroad operated a branch line to this point, and the new rail link brought in many Yosemite-bound tourists" (Wiki).
