Unpaged. A calendar for the year 1997, though still very useful today - each month features a piece of art from one of the classics, be it Peanuts, The Yellow Kid, Nancy, Doonesbury, Krazy Kat, etc. - along with trivia questions and vital dates in cartoon and comics history. Saddle-stapled calendar. Very good.

Mays is among the most influential designers in the history of the automobile. Mays's approach has revolutionized the industry by integrating branding and identity with the design process. Also at the foundation of his philosophy is a belief that the innovations of the past should inform future solutions. His cars intrigue us like no others because they respond to underlying emotional and cultural associations. This first book on Mays's work tracks his meteoric career from his start at Volkswagen-Audi to his current tenure at Ford, where he designs for eight lines (Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Mazda, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Aston Martin). Illustrated with more than eighty-five photographs, freehand sketches, and computer renderings, Retrofuturism reveals new ways of thinking about design that have the potential to greatly change the way we live in the twenty-first century." - Publisher. Index. Cover has flaps. This is a condensed edition of Louis Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture. Here is the detailed account of the architecture and philosophy of Louis Kahn, whose works have become a signature of the modernist aesthetic and whose vision permanently changed the direction of American architecture. Introduction by Vincent Scully. Preface by Julia Moore Converse. This contains six chapters: Adventures of Unexplored Places Defining a Philosophy, 1901-19511' The Mind Opens to Realizations Conceiving a New Architecture, 1951-1961; Assembly.A Place of transcendence Designs for Meeting; The Houses of the Inspirations Designs for Study; The Forum of the Availabilities Designs for Choice; and Light, The Giver of All Presences Designed to Honor Human Endeavor. Louis Isadore Kahn (born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky; March 5 [O.S. February 20] 1901 March 17, 1974) was an Estonian-born American architect based in Philadelphia. After working in various capacities for several firms in Philadelphia, he founded his own atelier in 1935. While continuing his private practice, he served as a design critic and professor of architecture at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957. From 1957 until his death, he was a professor of architecture at the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Kahn created a style that was monumental and monolithic; his heavy buildings for the most part do not hide their weight, their materials, or the way they are assembled. He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the RIBA Gold Medal. At the time of his death, he was considered by some as "America's foremost living architect." Vincent Joseph Scully Jr. (August 21, 1920 November 30, 2017)was an American art historian who was a Sterling Professor of the History of Art in Architecture at Yale University, and the author of several books on the subject. Architect Philip Johnson once described Scully as "the most influential architectural teacher ever." His lectures at Yale were known to attract casual visitors and packed houses, and regularly received standing ovations. Julia Moore Converse (1946-2020) worked as the curator and later as the Director of the Weitzman School's Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania. David Brownlee is a historian of modern architecture whose interests embrace a wide range of subjects in Europe and America, from the late eighteenth century to the present. His scholarship has been recognized with three major publication prizes from the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH). He served the SAH as editor of its Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians in 2008-2011, when he oversaw the launch of JSAH online, the magazine's multimedia online platform. The SAH named him a Fellow in 2015 and established the David B. Brownlee Dissertation Award in his honor in 2020. David G. De Long is Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Condensed Edition [stated]. Second Printing [stated].

The graphic arts of China presented in this volume are rightly considered to be among China's greatest artistic achievements. The different chapters of this survey have been written by experts who have long been specialists in their particular fields. The chapter on painting, written by Professor Werner Speiser of the Museum of Far Eastern Art in Cologne, Germany, covers the period from the T' ang Dynasty of the 7th century to the present day, showing the continuity in the history of painting of successive generations of artists. An outline of the lives of the painters themselves is included. Dr. Roger Goepper, Director of the Department of Far Eastern Art of the National Museum in Berlin, is the author of the chapters on calligraphy and stone rubbings. Essentially a Chinese art, calligraphy has a fundamental use as a script, a means of communication, but its aesthetic aspects promote it to the realm of pure art with recognizable characteristics showing the individual techniques and personalities of the calligraphers. In the domain of stone rubbings a new world is revealed to Occidental eyes since this form of art cannot be compared with anything known or practiced in the West. Jean Fribourg of Paris has worked for more than forty years on his researches into the history and techniques of Chinese prints. Besides comprehensive examples of Chinese wood engravings and color prints, M. Fribourg has included separate studies on the album of prints issued by the "Studio of the Ten Bamboos," the so~called Kaempfer series, and the "Mustard Seed Garden." The technical brilliance and spontaneity of these subjects, which had a remarkable vogue in China during the 17th and 18th centuries, will be admired by all lovers of Chinese art. Most of the illustrations in this book have been taken from prints in private collections in Europe and Japan and have not been published before. 364 pages, 59 color plates, 120 plates in monochrome with complete and detailed descriptions, bibliography.
