From 1923 onwards, until overtaken by the onset of colour photography, the Radio Times commissioned and reproduced work by some of the finest illustrators of the twentieth century -- wood engravings, scraperboard, line drawing and watercolour. Amongst the more well-known names in the list of over 150 artists are those of Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, Val Biro, David Gentleman, Charles Keeping, Paul Nash, W Heath Robinson, Gerald Scarfe, Ronald Searle and C F Tunnicliffe. This book, by Martin Baker, himself one of the select band of artists, will include a section on the History of the Radio Times and its patronage of fine illustrators; the reminiscences of an art student in the l930s and of an art teacher in the sixties, with almost 100 reproductions of some of the well-remembered illustrations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The books in this series aim to bring to a wide public the chief glories of the rich and varied collections of fine and decorative art in the Ashmolean Museum. Each volume takes a topic or field in which the Museum's holdings are internationally renowned and provides an introduction for the general reader and a compact guide for the expert. The Ashmolean's collection of Italian High Renaissance painted ceramics, although small, is one of the most significant in the world. This booklet provides a panoramic survey of this vivid "minor art" of Renaissance Italy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. The Ashmolean Museum, founded in 1683, has strong claims to be the oldest surviving institutional museum open to the public, yet, it is also the private museum of the University of Oxford. Over the centuries a continuing pattern of generous benefaction has accumulated astonishing collections in the university, and those in the fields of art and archaeology are concentrated in the Ashmolean. They range in time, from finds seven or eight thousand years old to 20th-century masterpieces. This illustrated volume provides examples of: Early-Chinese bronzes, Ancient Egyptian artefacts, sculptures and coins from classical Greece and Rome, Anglo-Saxon glass, Chinese porcelain, Indian sculpture and manuscript illustration, Islamic ceramics and Japanese screen paintings. Over half the volume is devoted to reproductions from the museum's magnificent holdings of European art - silver, maiolica, porcelain, bronzes and marbles - together with paintings, watercolours and drawings. Works by Giotto, Giorgione, Uccello and Raphael, by Rembrandt and Rubens, by the French Impressionists and by English artists from Gainsborough to Stanley Spencer. The late Sir David Piper, Director of the Ashmolean Museum from 1973-85, compiled the original edition prior to his retirements in 1985. This new edition illustrates additional artefacts, paintings and drawings acquired by the museum during the last decade, selected and described by the present Director, Professor Christopher White. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum holds a world-class collection of over 200 prints made by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669). Widely hailed as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt was also one of the most innovative and experimental printmakers of the seventeenth century. Rembrandt was extraordinary in creating prints not merely as multiples to be distributed but also as artistic expressions by using the etching printmaking technique for the sketchy compositions so typical of him. Almost drawing-like in appearance, these images were created by combining spontaneous lines with his remarkable sense for detail. Rembrandt was a keen observer and this clearly shows in his choice of subjects for his etchings: intense self-portraits with their penetrating gaze; atmospheric views of the Dutch countryside; lifelike beggars seen in the streets of his native Leiden; intimate family portraits as well as portrayals of his wealthy friends in Amsterdam; and biblical stories illustrated with numerous figures. This book presents Rembrandt as an unrivalled storyteller through a selection of over 70 prints from the Ashmolean collection through a variety of subjects ranging from 1630 until the late 1650s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

From his childhood visits to his uncle at Sunningwell, Turner was fascinated by Oxford: no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. Indeed, his first documented drawing, made at the age of 12, was a copy of one of Rooker's designs for the "Oxford Almanack", and it was followed by a substantial group of early drawings and sketches remarkable for the astonishingly rapid technical progress they display. His most important early commission was for 10 watercolours to be engraved as headpieces for the Oxford Almanack, the first of which was published in 1799. This book brings together all his views of the city and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works. They include watercolours by the teenage artist, watercolours commissioned for the "Oxford Almanack" together with preparatory works and finished watercolours for several projects in the 1820s and 1830s, when Turner was at the height of his powers. The year 2000 marks the centenary of the start of excavations at the site of Knossos on Crete, the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation which its excavator, Arthur Evans, called 'Minoan' after King Minos of Greek legend. The palace which he uncovered there was originally decorated with frescoed wall paintings, some of them showing figured scenes, which mostly survived only in a fragmentary and incomplete state. One of the most striking fresco images, and one which particularly engaged Evans's imagination, is the controversial figure of the Priest-King, whom Evans regarded as a portrayal of one of the priestly rulers of Knossos. This booklet gives an account of the history of its discovery, its re-creation and the important part it played in Evans's vision of Knossos. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Fine. The Ashmolean Museum is the oldest museum in Britain, housing Oxford University's unrivalled collection of art and antiquities from Europe, Central Asia and the Far East. Nothing in the museum is as rich in human interest as the collection of rings illustrated in this book, for each not only enhanced the beauty of the hand, but also had a deeper personal significance. There are early signets from the Minoan civilisation discovered by Arthur Evans, which introduce the category of seal ring indispensable for business not only in the ancient world, but well into modern times. Then key events - marriage and death - in the lives of the original owners are evoked by rings with symbols and loving messages. Biblical inscriptions, prayers, and images of Christ, the Virgin and the saints, illustrate the strength of religious faith in the age of the cathedrals. High ecclesiastical authority of that period is expressed by the famous ring found at Thame, designed for a relic of the True Cross. The extraordinary group of toadstone rings, used to assay poison, show how belief in the supernatural powers of stones persisted well into the seventeenth century. Of outstanding quality, these rings tell, in miniature, the fascinating story of jewellery from Pharaonic Egypt to Victorian Britain.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum and the Albertina are collaborating on a two-part exhibition project that will examine anew the role and the significance of drawing in Raphael's career. The Ashmolean holds the greatest collection of Raphael drawings in the world, and the Albertina is the custodian of a major collection including some of the most beautiful and important of the artist's sketches. Taken together, the two collections provide extraordinary resources that, amplified by carefully-selected international loans, will allow us to transform our understanding of the art of Raphael. The Oxford exhibition is based on new research by Dr Catherine Whistler of the Ashmolean Museum and Dr Ben Thomas from the University of Kent, in collaboration with Dr Achim Gnann of the Albertina. It will take Raphael's art of drawing as its focus, with the concept of eloquence as its underlying structure. Oratory runs as a linking thread in Raphael's drawings, which stand out for the importance given to the study of gestures, facial expressions, and drapery. Moreover, Raphael treated the expressive figure of the orator - poet, philosopher, muse, apostle, saint or sibyl - in fascinating and significant ways throughout his life. This selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art. This book preluded a major exhibition, which ran from 1 June to 3 October 2017, with a range of events happening throughout this time. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

A selection from the woodblock-print series "one hundred views of famous places in Edo" by Ando Hiroshige, 1797-1858. These 20 prints were published in 1856-1859, the last series that Hiroshige designed. The series title is the longer vertical cartouche in the upper right hand corner of each print, and beside it is the individual title for the print giving location. The pigments used for Japanese woodblock prints are fugitive and damaged by exposure to light, which means unfortunately that they cannot be often exhibited to the public.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. A comprehensive catalogue detailing the life and work of the artist William Blake, arranged chronologically and outlining the development of his influence and career from apprenticeship to his final years. Blake was a radical, challenging both perception and belief, he created words and images that had a luminous quality, strongly influenced by an intuitive inner vision, he valued imagination over reason and his work reflects this. Throughout the 1770s and 1780s Blake produced a substantial collection of drawings, engravings and engraved copper plates of monuments in Westminster Abbey while an apprentice to James Basire, the official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries. Following his apprenticeship he was accepted as a student in the Antique School of the Royal Academy, where he became an outspoken advocate for the work of Michaelangelo and Raphael. In the 1790s, his most inventive and prolific period, he developed a revolutionary method of etching his poetry and design together in relief on the same copper plate, that he called 'Illuminated Printing'.He used this to produce his most celebrated works, including the Songs of Innocence and of Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and Europe a Prophecy. A centerpiece to this collection will be his Manuscript Notebook, in which he wrote the Songs of Experience, one of greatest treasures of the British Library. During his final years, Blake pursued an interest in the Renaissance artist-printmakers, Durer, van Leyden, Bonosone and others, and reawakened interest in the technique of pure line engraving. This led to commissions for Blake to produce illustrations for the Book of Job and Dante. Above all, it was the commission to produce the small woodcut illustrations to Virgil's Pastorals that would deeply affect and inspire the early work of the group of young artists and engravers known as the Ancients and this is a celebration of his influence upon their imagery, painting in tempera, and graphic techniques.
