The battle of Pavia in 1525, in which Francis 1, King of France, was defeated and captured, had tremendous impact throughout Europe; it has been described as "marking the end of the Middle Ages". The contemporary panel painting which formed part of the foundation collection of the Ashmolean Museum in 1683 is one of the most dramatic and detailed images of Renaissance warfare. This book tells the story of the battle and of the making of this famous painting. This is the third title to appear in a uniform series of booklets illustrating and discussing major paintings in the Ashmolean's collections. The painting, which includes numerous foot-soldiers and horsemen representing phases of the imperial assaults on the French besiegers shows a view of the city from the north giving a detailed, visual account, in a compressed synopsis, of the main recorded events of the Battle. The rise of Modernism, from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, was played out with particular intensity in France, especially in Paris where international artists were drawn by salons and dealers, the creative exchanges between poets and painters, and the bohemian atmosphere of such places as Montmartre and Montparnasse. This catalogue traces a course from Neo-Classical and Romantic artists like David, Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix, through Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Degas, Monet and Seurat, to the ground-breaking experiments of Picasso and Braque; but it also shows that there was no straight line leading from tradition to the shock of abstraction. The story is altogether more interesting as academic artists and members of the avant-garde exchanged ideas and as rivalries developed between different schools and powerful characters. In works by Manet, Cezanne, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Matisse, Leger and Picasso, this catalogue explores the artists who created Modernism and how they did it. At the heart of the story is a choice group of works by Picasso, Braque and other artists who first experimented with Cubism. This handbook describes the Jewel and discusses the many questions it raises, not least whether it was made for King Alfred the Great (871-99). The jewel has received much attention from scholars since its discovery in 1693. The Ashmolean Museum also houses many of the objects that belong to the same late Anglo-Saxon period, and they help to set the Jewel in context. Some material in other collections is included for comparison; in particular, pictures are brought together for the first time of recent discoveries that have particular relevance to the Jewel. The handbook's text has been written by David A. A comprehensive catalogue detailing the life and work of the artist William Blake, arranged chronologically and outlining the development of his influence and career from apprenticeship to his final years. Blake was a radical, challenging both perception and belief, he created words and images that had a luminous quality, strongly influenced by an intuitive inner vision, he valued imagination over reason and his work reflects this. Throughout the 1770s and 1780s Blake produced a substantial collection of drawings, engravings and engraved copper plates of monuments in Westminster Abbey while an apprentice to James Basire, the official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries. Following his apprenticeship he was accepted as a student in the Antique School of the Royal Academy, where he became an outspoken advocate for the work of Michaelangelo and Raphael. In the 1790s, his most inventive and prolific period, he developed a revolutionary method of etching his poetry and design together in relief on the same copper plate, that he called 'Illuminated Printing'.He used this to produce his most celebrated works, including the Songs of Innocence and of Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and Europe a Prophecy. A centerpiece to this collection will be his Manuscript Notebook, in which he wrote the Songs of Experience, one of greatest treasures of the British Library. During his final years, Blake pursued an interest in the Renaissance artist-printmakers, Durer, van Leyden, Bonosone and others, and reawakened interest in the technique of pure line engraving. This led to commissions for Blake to produce illustrations for the Book of Job and Dante. Above all, it was the commission to produce the small woodcut illustrations to Virgil's Pastorals that would deeply affect and inspire the early work of the group of young artists and engravers known as the Ancients and this is a celebration of his influence upon their imagery, painting in tempera, and graphic techniques. Considered a father-figure to many in the movement, his work was enormously influential for many artists, including Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne. This major exhibition, of works drawn from the Ashmolean's collections as well as international loans, will span Pissarro's entire career. Pissarro continued to explore and refine his approach and technique throughout his life. The exhibition will look at how he responded to the previous generation of artists including Corot and Daubigny, to his relationship with the Impressionists with whom he allied himself and encouraged in the face of rejection by the established art world.
