Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. This is the novel "Theatre" by W. Somerset Maugham, issued as a paperback in 1944 by Avon Books. From the cover write-up : "The superb, brilliant, and beautiful actress, Julia Gosselyn, is the sparkling heroine of this ironical story of the theatre world. Julia, a consummate artist, and…a tremendously successful actress, is a faithful and devoted wife to her actor-manager husband, known as the 'handsomest man in England'. Her 'backstage' intrigues and Bohemian life lead her into temptation to which she unwillingly yields. the story of her life as it is changed from an artistic and accomplished personality, to a jealous and conscious-ridden woman, makes for the most entertaining kind of reading." TITLE : Theatre AUTHOR : W. Somerset Maugham (1864 - 1965) IMPRINT : Avon Books (No. 56) PLACE : New York DATE : [1944] EDITION : Reprint - First Avon Printing COVER ARTIST : A. Gonzales STATUS : OP — Out of Print DETAILS : Mass Market Paperback, golden age size; 256 pages, plus 3 pages of publisher's list and 1 page with a U. S. War Bonds and Savings promotion; 4 1/2" x 6 3/8"; pictorial wraps; text-block edges dyed red. No price on cover; rear cover taken up with publisher's promotion for New Avon Library series … the vignette of Shakespeare is the third version, established in 1944. The inside of the rear cover presents Avon's list of titles, with Maugham's "Theatre" being the last on the list. The inside of the front cover presents a brief recap of the story. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book which has been read, and shows clear signs of wear but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted:: EXTERIOR : Spine is darkened and creased; covers have considerable creasing and surface rub, as well as a bit of edge crimping, and a few minute edge tears - more so on the rear cover; text-block edges are darkened and weathered , and also display considerable weathering , with scattered spotting and loss of color. BINDING : Fairly solid - no leaves are detached or loose. The glue used in just about all vintage paperbacks of such age has likely dried, and the binding is likely more fragile than current paperbacks, thus care should be taken when handling. INTERIOR : Paper is toned - especially about the edges (this was war-time production - there were strictures on paper use and the type of paper to which one might have access ) - else the interior is clean and free of marking. No signatures. A. Gonzales (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Classic Science Fiction Stories by One of the Genre's Grand Masters. In my own mind, I cannot think of science fiction without thinking of Brian W. Aldiss. It seems he has always been there, which perhaps speaks more of my fascination with his novels and stories rather than any ant…e-diluvian presence on his part. I have found that the name of Aldiss on a story is assurance of a great read. "Neanderthal Planet" and its companion stories are no exceptions. COVER BLURB : TALES OF WONDER AND TERROR ! On NEANDERTHAL PLANET the beings were both less than human and more than human - and now they had to decide which way to go. If you fall into the wrong matrix of the past, present or future, you must beware the choices you face. The sign is clear: DANGER - RELIGION! INTANGIBLES, INC. could not be seen, but it ruled the lives - and deaths - of a couple and their children. SINCE THE ASSASSINATION, a drug granting immortality is conceived; then moon visitors find that time is distorted. Would Earth withstand such pressures? TITLE : Neanderthal Planet (Contains the stories, "Neanderthal Planet", "Danger Religion", "Intangibles, Inc.", "Since the Assassination") AUTHOR : Brian Aldiss (1925 - 2017) IMPRINT : Avon Books # XV2322 PLACE : New York DATE : (January 1970) EDITION : First Avon Printing - First U.S. Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP COVER ART : Don Ivan Punchatz DETAILS : Mass Market Paperback; 1926 pages; Approximately 4 3/16" x 7"; pictorial wraps, glued. BINDING : Solid and tight -- no pages are loose or detached. INTERIOR : Clean and presentable. Don Ivan Punchatz (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. When "Call It Sleep", a critically celebrated novel by Henry Roth, was first published in 1934, its public sales were very low, and thus the book was dropped from publication and languished, almost forgotten. In 1964 Roth again decided to try the market for this book. Avon Books, one of the top… paperback publishers of the time, took the book on and published the reprint: sales were much better for the reprint. It happened that Avon was experimenting at that time with rounded fore-edge corners, and this copy, a Third Printing from November, 1964 has the rounded corners. (This experiment in cover style was pretty quickly dropped, so later printings do not have the rounded corners.) TITLE : Call It Sleep AUTHOR : Henry Roth (1906 - 1995) AFTERWORD : Walter Allen (1911 - 1995) COVER PHOTOGRAPH : Jay Maisel IMPRINT : Avon books PLACE : New York DATE : (November, 1964) EDITION : Reprint : First Paperback Edition. First Avon Edition, Third Printing. DETAILS : Mass Market Paperback, with experimental rounded fore-edge corners; photo-pictorial cover; size : 4 1/4" x 7 1/8"; 447 pages CONDITION . VERY GOOD … This is a previously owned book with an inked inscription on the inside of the front cover, else being in clean, presentable condition, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR - Reading creases to spine; joints are nicked and rubbed; cover edges slightly nicked; text-block edges toned. BINDING - The book seems to have been read, but the binding remains tight. INTERIOR - The inscription on the inside of the front cover is written in red ink ("Mom, SI says this is the most neglected novel in a long time, so I thought it might be interesting ") ; the paper throughout is considerably toned - an unfortunate production effect - else the interior is clean and free of marking. Jay Maisel (Cover Photo) (illustratore).
