Their visionary ideas took the British art establishment by storm. They chose their name as a signal that they intended to paint in the manner of medieval and early Renaissance painters who worked before the time of Raphael, whom they considered epitomised the lacklustre, soulless approach to painting that had been executed down the centuries ever since. As with so many new art movements, they did not have an easy time of it. Most British art critics and the art establishment ~ identified in those days with London's Royal Academy ~ ridiculed the early Pre~Raphaelite paintings; none was more cruel than Charles Dickens, who savaged Millais's Christ in the House of His Parents unmercilessly. It would take John Ruskin, the premier art critic of the time, to redress the balance in the form of a letter of support to The Times; and the purchasing power of a number of wealthy patrons, such as Thomas Combe, superintendant of the Oxford University Press, whose collection would eventually go to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. This book charts the development of the Pre~Raphaelites and their influence on a wider stage, including some of the work of those who followed in their footsteps. Biographies of all the major Pre~Raphaelite painters are included as are the most important Pre~Raphaelite paintings, including The Hireling Shepherd, Work, Ophelia, The Scapegoat, The Golden Stairs, Autumn Leaves and many more. These are works which truly repay scrutiny: the sheer density of detail, elaborate use of symbolism, vibrant colors, and unusual images enrich every painting.
