Paperback. Condizione: New. 3rd Revised edition. A Dictionary of the Lycian Language by H. Craig Melchert is the first and only comprehensive dictionary in English of the Anatolian language Lycian, and represents the author's thoroughgoing revision of his originally self-published and limitedly available Lycian Lexicon. A Dictionary of the Lycian Language includes every form of every word (including proper names) preserved in our inscriptional corpus of both Lycian A and Lycian B (Milyan). Each entry contains, besides a gloss, all the attested inflectional forms of the lemma; a complete list of the inscriptional citations; grammatical and etymological notes; and references to secondary literature. Introducing the work is a grammatical sketch of Lycian and a bibliography, and rounding it off are a glossary of personal names and a glossary of Milyan. A Dictionary of the Lycian Language, with its clear organization, thorough treatment, and many important new interpretations will be an indispensable reference tool for scholars in numerous fields of research, including Anatolian and Indo-European linguistics, comparative philology, and Ancient Near Eastern history.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Tocharian B, an Indo-European language spoken and written in the first millennium C.E. in parts of what is now the Tarim Basin of western China, is of great importance to numerous disciplines, from Indo-European historical linguistics to the study of Central Asia, the Silk Road and Buddhism. This first-ever textbook in the language makes Tocharian B, hitherto familiar mostly to specialists, readily accessible to a broad audience. In twenty graduated lessons, the student is introduced to all the language's grammar, with translation exercises between English and Tocharian in both directions and numerous passages taken from original texts. The book assumes no familiarity with the scholarly disciplines above, but simultaneously contains much information useful to specialists by virtue of the author's broad knowledge and familiarity with the most up-to-date literature. A full glossary, together with tables of declensions and conjugations, key to the exercises, and bibliography round out the volume. The Tocharian B texts that Weiss uses as the basis for his grammar date from the 5th to 10th centuries, but were not discovered until the early 1900s. Many of them are Buddhist religious texts, but other documents include caravan passes from the Silk Road, economic documents from Buddhist monasteries and a famous love poem. The language is now extinct, with scholars surmising that it was eventually supplanted by the Uyghur language. It is important linguistically because, as a separate branch of the Indo-European family, it contributes unique evidence to scholars' understanding about what the ancestor language would have been like. It is also important culturally because the Tocharians were probably one of the main vectors of the transfer of Buddhism from India to China.

Not only covering the language's phonological, morphological, and syntactic prehistory in great depth, they also include important subsidiary topics like language contact and Etruscan. Basic information is presented in concise outline format in the main text and is augmented by countless additional details that populate the footnotes. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography followed by complete indices of forms, ancient sources, and subjects.

Forty-one scholars from across the world join in celebrating the work of Brent Vine, whose prodigious oeuvre in Classical and Indo-European linguistics needs no introduction to specialists. The papers in this broad-ranging collection include not just numerous studies of the Classical languages and texts by authorities like A. C. Cassio, Olav Hackstein, Richard Martin, Alan Nussbaum, and Paolo Poccetti, but also work on more far-flung corners of the family, including Lithuanian (Daniel Petit), Lydian (Philomen Probert), Gothic (Jared Klein) and Tocharian (Adam Catt, Ronald Kim), with much more in between.  Contributions in English, German and French.
