Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Tauchnitz Copyright Edition (Collection of British Authors, Vol. 4384) - Authorised Continental Edition Binding: Original printed wrappers (paperback / soft cover) Pages: 270 pp. + 32 pp. publisher's catalogue at rear Condition: Fair (complete, readable, rebinding candidate - see ultra-detailed report below) Rare 1913 Tauchnitz copyright edition of "A Selection from the Poetry of W. B. Yeats" personally chosen, prefaced and authorised by W. B. Yeats himself. This is Volume 4384 in the famous "Collection of British Authors" series published by Bernhard Tauchnitz in Leipzig. The edition was strictly for continental circulation only and could not legally be imported into Great Britain or her colonies - the famous copyright notice appears on the wrapper and is reproduced in full in the photographs. The back wrapper carries the "Latest Volumes - January 1913" list, confirming this is the true first Tauchnitz issue of Yeats' selected poems. Yeats wrote a special preface dated October 1912 in which he explains his choices: he selected the plays and lyrics exactly as they were performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and deliberately omitted or revised passages that worked better on stage than in print. He also discusses his desire to create lyrics that could be sung and his decision to choose words that stand alone without music. This preface is printed in full in the book and is a fascinating insight into Yeats' creative process at the height of his early career. The contents are comprehensive and match the exact selection Yeats wanted for this European edition: EARLY POEMS (1885-1892) THE WANDERINGS OF USHEEN (Book III, 1889) THE COUNTESS CATHLEEN (1892-1912) - the full Abbey Theatre version with the revised ending. LYRICS (1892-1899) includes "He wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" (the iconic poem that ends this section) THE OLD AGE OF QUEEN MAEVE BAILE AND AILLINN (1902) LYRICS (1899-1904) ON BAILE'S STRAND (1904) DEIRDRE (1906) LYRICS (1904-1912) Full NOTES section at the end. Every famous early Yeats lyric that collectors seek is here. This is essentially Yeats' own curated "greatest hits" of his first three decades, published at the moment he was transitioning from the Celtic Twilight period to his mature modernist voice. The Tauchnitz series was legendary among 19th- and early-20th-century travellers: cheap, lightweight English-language editions sold across Europe in railway stations and hotels. Yeats was one of the few living authors to receive the honour of a dedicated Tauchnitz volume during his lifetime, making this 1913 copyright edition especially desirable for Yeats scholars and Tauchnitz completists. CONDITION REPORT (exactly as shown in all your photographs): This is an honest, unrestored copy in Fair condition - ideal for reading, research, or professional rebinding. The front wrapper (cover) is fully detached but completely present with no loss of text or ornamentation. The binding is loose on the first 16 pages (the initial gathering is separating from the spine but still attached). The spine is heavily rubbed and frayed with some loss of paper at the head and foot. Wrappers show typical age-toning, edge chipping, and light creasing consistent with 113 years of handling. All pages are present and intact; the paper has uniform light browning (normal for Tauchnitz editions) but is clean with no foxing, no inscriptions, no library stamps, no tears, and no missing leaves. The text block remains square. The 32-page publisher's catalogue at the rear is complete and lists other January 1913 titles. A genuine first-issue copy (not a facsimile or later Tauchnitz reprint). Scarce in any condition; most surviving examples have been rebound or are in poorer shape. This one is entirely readable right now and would make an excellent addition to any W. B. Yeats or Irish literature collection. Perfect for the collector who wants an affordable, authentic 1913 Yeats Tauchnitz or for someone planning a custom leather binding.
